On 29 March 2021, at approximately 2115 hours local time, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies responded to a Grand Junction apartment complex after a tenant reported two residents making a toxic substance using chemicals. The Grand Junction Fire Department’s (GJFD) Hazmat Team responded to assist, examined three bottles of undisclosed chemicals, and deemed the scene safe. A 33-year-old man and 44-year-old woman were arrested for possession, use, or removal of explosives or incendiary devices/possession of components. MCSO is continuing to investigate with assistance from Federal authorities.

The Massachusetts State Police (MSP), MSP Bomb Squad, and ATF responded to assist. Bomb squad technicians rendered the device safe with a controlled detonation. The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of incendiary materials and felony possession of an incendiary device.

On 1 October 2020, Poland’s National Prosecutor’s Office announced that Internal Security Agency investigators discovered bomb-making materials (BMM) and arrested a German national during a counterterrorism raid in Gdansk the previous week. During the raid, authorities seized 1.2 kg [~2.65 lb] of TNT, ammunition, a fuse, a flare gun, and a tear gas canister. A sapper team at the raid removed the BMM from the scene. On 30 April 2021, at approximately 1815 hours local time, St. Charles Police (SCP) officers responded after two suspects threw three improvised incendiary devices (IIDs), described as Molotov cocktails, at a residence and a local restaurant. The first IID was thrown at the residence and caused minor exterior damage. Two additional IIDs were thrown at the restaurant, injuring a woman who was treated for minor burns. The suspects fled in a vehicle before crashing approximately a mile away. SCP officers searched the car, found additional bomb-making material (BMM) for manufacturing IIDs, and arrested a 23-year-old male suspect and a 16-year-old female suspect. The SCP charged the male suspect with arson, armed criminal action, and multiple counts of assault among other charges. The investigation is ongoing.

On 30 August 2020, at approximately 1315 hours local time, the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) Boating Safety Unit responded after a fisherman on the Sacramento River in Cottonwood reeled ashore a device he believed was a pipe bomb. During this time, another fisherman reported finding a second pipe bomb nearby. The Shasta County Bomb Squad responded and destroyed the IEDs at the scene after they were determined to be live devices. No injuries were reported, and TCSO is advising fishermen in the area to remain alert for other potential devices.

On 28 April 2021, at approximately 1445 hours local time, officers from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) responded to a Northwest neighborhood after a male suspect threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, at the feet of a pedestrian. The IID functioned, causing lacerations to the victim’s leg and burning their shoes. The victim was treated at the scene. Detectives from MPD’s Arson Task Force, which includes the ATF and DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, assisted with the investigation. MPD officers arrested the 25-year-old male suspect and charged him with assault with a dangerous weapon (Molotov cocktail) and possession of a destructive device. The investigation is ongoing.

On 23 March 2021, at approximately 1540 hours local time, Arlington County Police Department officers discovered two pipe bombs and a homemade sawed-off shotgun at the Ballston home of a 34-year-old man who had been arrested earlier that day. Arlington County Fire Department Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and removed the devices. Investigators have not disclosed any additional device details. The arrest and search followed an incident on 22 March, when the suspect made threatening statements about acquaintances and showed witnesses a bag containing the shotgun and suspected ammunition. FBI agents are assisting with the ongoing investigation.

On 28 April 2021, local security forces discovered a bag containing six IEDs stashed under a vehicle at an Istanbul bus station and rendered them safe. Four of the devices were radio-controlled IEDs using cell phones and the other two used timers for a firing switch. Each IED was contained in an aluminum box, and the boxes were concealed in cigarette cartons. According to authorities, the devices contained 5 kg [⁓11 lb] of undisclosed plastic explosives. Police arrested three suspected members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PPK) in connection with the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
