On 3 December 2020, Marshfield Police Department (MPD) officers and Marathon County Bomb Squad technicians responded to a Marshfield apartment complex after receiving a tip from a family member that a 70-year-old resident was in possession of several explosive devices. Bomb squad technicians examined multiple IEDs, described as pipe bombs, before removing them from the apartment and rendering them safe. MPD officers were called back to the apartment complex on 5 December after the property manager reported finding more IEDs in the suspect’s onsite storage facility. Bomb squad technicians examined the five additional IEDs, also described as pipe bombs, before removing and rendering them safe. The FBI and Marshfield Fire and Rescue personnel responded to assist. The suspect is not currently in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.

On 10 May 2021, FBI agents executed a federal search warrant at two locations in Douglas and found an IED and a potential second device. The searches followed a joint FBI and Douglas Police Department (DPD) investigation of an online profile that provided bomb-making instructions. DPD officers took a 14-year-old male suspect into custody. The devices were seized, but no additional information has been released. The suspect, who will be charged as an adult, is facing charges of organizing, financing, and supervising an act of terrorism; incitement to induce or promote terrorism; furnishing and assisting in acts of terrorism; facilitating an act of terrorism; and two counts of misconduct involving weapons. On 20 December 2020, at approximately 1950 hours local time, officers from the Kingston Police Department’s Patrol Division responded to calls reporting a disturbance and fire at a restaurant in Kingston after a 36-year-old male suspect threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, while inside the restaurant. No injuries were reported, and the property sustained only minor damage. The cause of the incident was not reported. On 29 March 2021, at approximately 2115 hours local time, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies responded to a Grand Junction apartment complex after a tenant reported two residents making a toxic substance using chemicals. The Grand Junction Fire Department’s (GJFD) Hazmat Team responded to assist, examined three bottles of undisclosed chemicals, and deemed the scene safe. A 33-year-old man and 44-year-old woman were arrested for possession, use, or removal of explosives or incendiary devices/possession of components. MCSO is continuing to investigate with assistance from Federal authorities.

SJSO deputies arrested the suspect at gunpoint and found an IED, described as a pipe bomb, on his person. The SJSO Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team responded to assist. EOD technicians searched the suspect’s car and discovered two additional pipe bombs in the trunk, as well as bomb-making materials (BMM) for manufacturing additional pipe bombs. On 13 May 2021, an Israeli Air Force (IAF) F-16 fighter jet shot down an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) equipped with an internal explosive payload weighing 5 kg [~11 lb] launched by the terrorist group Hamas from the Gaza Strip. No further information on the explosive payload has been released. The UAS was one of at least two intercepted by Israeli authorities, with one aimed at an Israeli gas rig in the Mediterranean. During the recent hostilities, Hamas has launched an unspecified number of similar UASs at targets in Israel and claims the UASs are constructed within the Gaza Strip.
