On 12 December 2020, the Austrian Interior Minister announced the arrest of five far-right extremists who were allegedly plotting to smuggle weapons, ammunition, and explosives to co-conspirators in Germany. The prime suspect, a 53-year-old man, reportedly has extensive ties to Austrian organized crime and neo-Nazi groups. On 9 December 2020, at approximately 1630 hours local time, Marnes Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS) firefighters responded to an enormous fire in a retail fireworks store in a Cormontreuil shopping center. A juvenile, who was part of a larger group, launched a pyrotechnic device, described as a rocket, igniting the other pyrotechnic devices in the store. The SDIS contained the fire so adjacent stores were not damaged, but the targeted store burned down and collapsed. One customer witnessed the juvenile remove the rocket from a shelf and launch it in the back of the store, and another witness heard the pyrotechnics function and saw the juveniles flee the scene. Two hundred people from the store and neighboring stores were evacuated, and no injuries were reported. The Reim’s Prosecutors Office is investigating the incident.
