New Jersey: Magnet Fishers Pull Military Projectile from River

On 9 November 2024, at approximately 1230 hours local time, Cherry Hill Police Department officers responded to Cooper River in Cherry Hill after ordnance, described as an old military projectile, was pulled from the river by two fishermen who were using a magnet in the water near the Cuthbert Boulevard bridge. The Camden County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad was called to assist, and authorities stated that the ordnance showed signs of having been in the river for a long time. The bomb squad removed the ordnance from the area in order to safely dispose of it.

New York: Pyrotechnic Devices and BMM Discovered in Residence of Man Plotting to Attack Migrants, 1 Arrested

On 26 September 2024, a 27-year-old male suspect was arrested after police officers recovered pyrotechnics and bomb-making material (BMM), including explosive substances from disassembled pyrotechnics that had been wrapped in tin foil, long nail cartridges that were also wrapped in foil, BB pellets, and green wire, from his residence on 77th Street in Elmhurst. The search was conducted as part of an investigation into the suspect, who had told an acquaintance that he was constructing IEDs to target a small hostel in Queens used to temporarily house migrants from the U.S. southern border.

New Jersey: IIDs Thrown at Apartment Building

On 28 September 2024, at approximately 0100 hours local time, a male suspect reportedly threw two improvised incendiary devices (IIDs), described as Molotov cocktails, at an apartment building on the 500 block of Vine Street in Elizabeth before fleeing the scene. Elizabeth firefighters responded and quickly extinguished the blaze. No injuries were reported. A county arson investigator stated that a “bottle cap with a wick and the smell of some form of accelerant” was found at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

New Jersey: 4 Explosive Devices, Firearms, Ammunition Seized, 2 Arrested

On 24 September 2024, Totowa Police Department (TPD) officers and the Passaic County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team and bomb unit found four unspecified explosive devices and a cache of illegal firearms hidden in a crawl space, along with 129 fully loaded high-capacity magazines, thousands of rounds of ammunition, illegal edged weapons and blades, and ballistic body armor at a residence on Lincoln Ave in Totowa. TPD began an investigation after receiving an anonymous tip that detailed “reckless” behavior with firearms by the home’s 35-year-old male resident.

New York: Explosive Device Functioned in Neighborhood

On 30 August 2024, at approximately 1130 hours local time, New York City Police Department officers and bomb squad technicians responded to an area near Hughes Avenue in the Bronx for a report of an explosion. An explosive device described as containing pyrotechnic powder was functioned, and the suspect fled the scene on a scooter. No injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.

New York: Grenade Found During Investigation

On 23 August 2024, at approximately 1330 hours local time, New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers discovered a grenade during an investigation at an apartment complex on the 600 block of Arnow Avenue in the Bronx. The NYPD Bomb Squad was called to assist, and bomb squad technicians removed the device. No further information has been released.

New Jersey: Suspect Throws IIDs Igniting Home, 1 Arrested

On 7 August 2024, at approximately 1030 hours local time, a Bloomfield Police Department (BPD) officer responded to a house fire and extinguished it single-handedly. Upon further investigation of the scene, the responding officer discovered an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, in the driveway. During the investigation, a female suspect, possibly under the influence of drugs, returned to the home with another IID and was arrested. BPD believes that a similar IID was used to ignite the house fire. The investigation is ongoing.

New York: IID Thrown During Home Invasion, Additional IIDs Found on Suspect

On 26 July 2024, at approximately 2200 hours local time, a 42-year-old male suspect forcefully entered a home on the 400 block of West Fourth Street in Elmira and threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, at the living room wall. The IID functioned and lit part of the wall and floor on fire before the suspect fled the scene. The resident and neighbors were able to extinguish the blaze before calling the Elmira Police Department (EPD) and Elmira Fire Department, who both responded to the scene, along with New York State Fire Investigators.

On 19 July 2024, Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) deputies executed a search warrant at an apartment on Main Street in Schaghticoke and discovered two explosive devices, cocaine, fentanyl, packaging materials, scales, and an unspecified amount of U.S. currency.

New York: Pipe Bomb and Machete Found in Vehicle, 2 Arrested

On 24 July 2024, at approximately 1230 hours local time, New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers discovered a suspicious device in a vehicle near the NYPD 25th Precinct in East Harlem after one of the car’s two male occupants reported a domestic assault with a machete by the other occupant. NYPD officers recovered the machete, as well as an IED in the back seat. NYPD Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and examined the device, pictured as a pipe bomb attached to two hairspray bottles, before removing the device for further examination.
