Hawaii: Suspected Pipe Bomb Found in Home After Standoff, 1 Arrested

On 9 October 2024, at approximately 1000 hours local time, the Hawaii Police Department (HPD), HPD Special Response Team, an FBI SWAT team and Crisis Negotiation Team, and agents from the U.S. Marshal Service responded to a residence on the 11-3000 block of Nahelenani Street in Volcano for reports of a man illegally occupying a residence. The 58-year-old suspect barricaded himself inside the home and discharged a firearm at authorities on several occasions. On 10 October, the suspect was apprehended and arrested after attempting to escape the residence.

California: Pyrotechnics Functioned Outside of Home in Prank Stunt

On 20 August 2024, at approximately 2100 hours local time, an unidentified suspect lit a pyrotechnic device on the road outside a Coronado home while a second suspect rang the doorbell. The device functioned near the resident’s vehicle but did not cause any damage. The resident discovered a large pyrotechnic device in the street and notified the Coronado Police Department. Surveillance video captured the incident. No further details were provided.

California: Explosive Device Functioned in Neighborhood, 1 Arrested

On 11 August 2024, at approximately 0129 hours local time, Merced Police Department (MPD) officers responded to a reported explosion in the 700 block of Sunol Court but could not locate the site of the explosion. After examining video evidence, officers identified the site, as well as the Sacramento residence of a 24-year-old male suspect. MPD Bomb Squad technicians responded to the residence and found additional evidence on the suspect before arresting him. No further device-related details were provided.

Nevada: IED and Explosives Devices Discovered at Residential Property

On 12 August 2024, Elko County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad technicians responded to an Elko County subdivision for reports of a backpack containing explosive devices on a residential property. Bomb squad technicians identified the devices as a modified pineapple-style hand grenade, dynamite, one electric blasting cap, and a Vietnam War-era smoke grenade. Bomb squad technicians disposed of the devices via controlled detonation. No charges will be filed because the owner of the explosives is deceased.

Hawaii: IED Functioned on Roadside, 1 Injured, 1 Arrested

On the evening of 8 August 2024, an IED that had been emplaced in a trash can on the side of Old Haleakala Highway in Makawao, Maui, functioned, striking a passing vehicle and damaging it, as well as injuring the driver. According to the FBI and Maui Police Department (MPD), the incident is connected to the recent discovery of multiple similar IEDs emplaced in trash cans along roadways between Kahului and Kula.

Hawaii: Brush Fire Ignited by IIDs

On 22 July 2024, at approximately 1645 hours local time, Kauai Fire Department crews and the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife extinguished a brush fire in Waimea, above Panini Place. On 23 July, investigators discovered improvised incendiary devices (IIDs) near another fire on Poki'i Ridge, leading them to believe both fires were intentionally set. No injuries or structural damages were reported. In addition to these incidents, the cause of a 15 July wildfire in the nearby Hanapeepe-Kaumakani area remains under investigation.

California: 1,000 lb of Illegal Fireworks Recovered in Search, 1 Arrested

On 20 June 2024, the Riverside Police Department, Riverside Fire Department Arson Investigations Unit, and State Fire Marshal’s Office agents discovered approximately 1,000 lb of pyrotechnics and 100 M-80 explosive devices while searching a residential property in the 5800 block of Clifton Avenue in Riverside. The bulk of the explosives were found on the backyard patio. A 23-year-old male suspect was arrested on suspicion of possession of destructive devices, possession of unlicensed pyrotechnics, possession of an illicit firearm, and child endangerment.

California: Decomposing Dynamite and Blasting Caps Discovered on Property

On 1 July 2024, at approximately 1750 hours local time, the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Indians Road in Janesville after individuals clearing out the home found explosives in an ice chest. Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Consolidated Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist, examined the explosives, determined they were sticks of dynamite in advanced stages of decomposition, and removed them from the scene via a robot and a blast container for disposal at a safe location.

California: Pipe Bomb and Additional Explosive Devices Discovered, 3 Arrested

On 3 July 2024, detectives with the Kern County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) Rural Crime Investigation Unit discovered multiple IEDs, including one described as a pipe bomb, as well as bomb-making material (BMM), copper wiring, and tools for electrical wire theft while searching a home in the 8200 block of Halleluiah Street in southeast Bakersfield. Two male suspects, ages 26 and 32, and a 53-year-old female suspect were arrested. The Kern County High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force, Kern County Probation Department, and KCSO Lamont Substation assisted with the incident.

California: Non-Functional IED Emplaced Near Business, 1 Arrested

On 3 July 2024, at approximately 1006 hours local time, San Jose Police Department officers and bomb squad technicians responded to a bomb threat phone call at a business in the 1300 block of Ridder Park Drive and discovered an IED. Bomb squad technicians examined the device, determined it was “incomplete but viable,” and rendered the device safe. Officers arrested a 56-year-old male suspect.
