California: IED Functions at Bus Stop

On 8 April 2019 at approximately 0950 hours local time, an IED functioned at a Tenderloin bus stop. According to the San Francisco Police Department, witnesses described the device as a pipe bomb and saw a male suspect ride away from the scene. There is no further information on the device and the investigation is ongoing.

California: Woman Injured After Functioning Explosive Device

On 28 March 2019 at approximately 2130 hours local time, Merced Police Department (MPD) officers responded to reports of an explosion, which injured only the female suspect. According to MPD, the woman set off an unidentified explosive device behind a grocery store, injuring her hand and chest. MPD Bomb Squad investigators are examining the remaining evidence, but there is no additional information about the device. The investigation is ongoing.

California: Parolee Arrested with Associated Components

On 25 March 2019, Sacramento County Park Rangers conducted a vehicle search near River Bend Park and found unidentified precursor materials described as material possibly used to make pipe bombs. The vehicle was occupied by a 51-year-old male parolee who had not paid for parking. The Sacramento County Bomb Squad removed and disposed of the material. The suspect was arrested.

California: Pipe Bomb Found During Probation Check

On 22 March 2019, Hemet/San Jacinto Valley Gang Task Force officers found a pipe bomb and ammunition during the search of a residence as part of a probation compliance check. Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Hazardous Device Team technicians responded to the scene and rendered safe the pipe bomb. The 42-year-old male resident was arrested for possession of a destructive device. No further device-related details were provided.
