California: Pyrotechnics Functioned in School Bathroom, 2 Arrested

On 3 April 2024, at approximately 1137 hours local time, the Petaluma Police Department (PPD) began receiving reports of an explosion at Kenilworth Junior High School in Petaluma. PPD officers and firefighters were dispatched to the scene and the school was evacuated. With assistance from a PPD bomb-sniffing dog, police determined that a pyrotechnic device, described as a commercial “quarter-stick” style pyrotechnic, had been functioned inside a boys’ bathroom. No injuries were reported. PPD officers identified two juvenile male students as the alleged perpetrators.
