Oklahoma: IIDs Functioned in Home, 1 Arrested

On 17 March 2024, Bethany Police Department (BPD) officers and the Bethany Fire Department (BFD) responded to a home near Northwest 50th Street and North Rockwell Avenue for a report of a fire. The BFD extinguished the fire and reported that accelerants had been used, as well as identified bullet holes on the side of the house. Neighbors told responding officers that they had heard explosions and gunshots prior to the blaze.

New York Large Quantity of Pyrotechnics Functioned Due to Fire, 1 Arrested

On 19 March 2024, authorities including the Franklin Square Fire Department, Arson Bomb Squad, Nassau County Fire Marshal, and the Town of Hempstead Building Department responded to a home on Morton Avenue in Franklin Square for a report of a fire. The blaze started in a garage at the home and had begun spreading to adjacent properties when first responders heard a series of explosions that resulted in the fire spreading inside the home and at an additional nearby property.

Louisiana FBI Investigation Discovers IEDs and BMM in Residence, 1 Arrested

On 14 March 2024, an FBI tactical team raided a home in Madisonville as part of an investigation into the purchase of materials that were suspected of being used to make explosive devices. The FBI was first alerted about a 66-year-old man making online suspicious purchases of explosive manuals and bomb making material (BMM), including explosive precursor chemicals (EPCs), in January 2024. The suspect did not have a license to deal in the materials and had been arrested previously for the manufacture of IEDs.

California: Explosive Device Thrown into Business, 1 Arrested

On 14 March 2024, at approximately 1030 hours local time, Modesto Fire Department crews discovered a suspicious device while responding to a fire at a business on the 100 block of McHenry Avenue. The Modesto Police Department Bomb Squad responded to assist, examined the unspecified device, and removed it. A witness stated the landlord threw a device at a bookkeeper that released “fireballs,” starting the fire. The blaze was quickly extinguished. No further device details were provided. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of arson.

California: Explosive Material Found in Vehicle and Residence, 1 Arrested

On 10 March 2024, at approximately 1100 hours local time, Riverside County Sheriff's Department (RCSD) deputies conducted a traffic stop of a suspect with several warrants out for his arrest near the intersection of Ramona Expressway and State Street in San Jacinto. Deputies found 5 lb of explosive material, 8 firearms, a suppressor, ammunition, and high-capacity magazines while searching the suspect's vehicle. RCSD deputies searched the suspect’s home at the 1400 block of Calle San Sebastian and discovered 20 lb of additional explosive material.

Virginia: Explosive Device Found During Drug Response

On 8 March 2024, Hampton Police Department (HPD) officers responded to the Willow Oaks neighborhood for a report of an overdose and found a 43-year-old man unconscious. After the man was transported to the hospital, investigators discovered an unspecified explosive device and materials believed to be consistent with the production of meth while searching the home. The Newport News Police Bomb Squad and HPD Hazmat Team responded to assist. No further device details were provided. The investigation is ongoing.

Virginia: Evidence of Explosives Discovered in Residence, 1 Arrested

On 7 March 2024, Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Virginia State Police Bomb Squad technicians discovered "evidence of explosives” while searching a residence in Maurertown. No additional details regarding the explosives were released. A 14-year-old boy was arrested and charged with manufacture or possession of a firebomb or explosive.

Missouri: Pipe Bomb Found in Home

On 13 March 2024, St. Joseph Police Department officers responded to a home on the 500 Block of Shady Avenue after a local man called following an incident in which another man in the home asked him to ignite an IED in the residence. Kansas City Police Department Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist, examined the device, described as a pipe bomb, and disposed of it. No further device details were provided. The investigation is ongoing.

Missouri: IED Discovered Inside Mailbox

On 11 March 2024, at approximately 1405 hours local time, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies received a report that an IED contained in envelope was discovered in a mailbox at a residence on the 1700 block of Old Highway 141 in Fenton. Officers described the envelope as containing three sticks of explosives that resembled “homemade dynamite” and a bottle of possible gunpowder with each item being fused. The St. Louis County Bomb and Arson Unit responded to assist. Bomb technicians examined the device, before removing it from the scene and disposing of it safely.

Missouri: IID Thrown at Victim, 1 Arrested

On 10 March 2024, at approximately 1113 hours local time, Callaway County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a residence on the 8400 block of State Highway NN in Fulton, after an 18-year-old male suspect threw an improvised incendiary device (IID) described as a Molotov cocktail at the victim and attempted to assault them with a machete. The IID failed to ignite, and the victim was not injured. The suspect was arrested and charged with two counts of First-Degree Assault, among other charges.
