Thailand: RCIED Injures Three Security Volunteers

On 12 July 2019 at approximately 0750 hours local time, a radio-controlled IED (RCIED) detonated on the side of a road in Muang district as four security volunteers drove by on motorcycles. Three of the volunteers sustained injures. Security officials say the RCIED was inside a metal box and weighed at least 3 kg (6.6 lb). Debris included a radio device, electrical wires, and a battery. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but authorities blame southern insurgents active in the area.

Philippines: Hand Grenade Thrown at Restaurant

On 11 July 2019 at approximately 0040 hours local time, a hand grenade detonated after a male suspect threw the ordnance in front of a restaurant in Quezon City. No casualties were sustained and the restaurant was undamaged, while two vehicles sustained minor damage. Investigators recovered a safety lever, a striker spring, and fragments from an MK2 grenade at the scene. Authorities did not establish a motive for the attack.

Libya: Three Killed in VBIED Attack on Funeral

On 11 July 2019, a vehicle-borne IED (VBIED) was used to attack the funeral of former senior military commander Khalifa Mismari. Three people were killed and 15 wounded in the attack on Huwari cemetery in Benghazi. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Mismari was the assistant commander of Libya’s special forces under former leader Muammar al-Gaddafi.

Ireland: IID Attack on Convicted Criminal

On 7 July 2019 at approximately 0100 hours local time, the Garda Police and Dublin Fire Brigade responded to reports of an improvised incendiary device (IID) attack on a private residence. The attack targeted a convicted rapist in Whitehall. No injuries were reported, but the front of the home sustained major damage. A source told reporters the community wanted to remove the target from the area because of his crimes. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

South Africa: Robbers Use An Explosive On Gas Station Safe

On 9 July 2019 at approximately 0330 hours local time, three suspects, one armed with an assault rifle, entered a gas station in Pretoria and detonated an explosive device in an attempt to open a drop safe. The explosive device heavily damaged the safe, but the contents remained inaccessible. The suspects then stole cash from the register and commercial items before fleeing the scene. No injuries were reported, and local police opened an investigation into the robbery.

Ireland: IID Damages Private Residence

On 9 July 2019 at approximately 0400 hours local time, Gardai responded to reports of a fire caused by an improvised incendiary device (IID) thrown at a private residence in Drogheda, north of Dublin. The occupant of the residence was home at the time but was uninjured. The residence sustained minor damage to the entrance. No arrests have been made, but authorities say the attack may be connected to a number of other violent incidents linked to an ongoing feud in the town.
