Pennsylvania: Suspected Explosive Device Discovered During Traffic Stop

On 30 June 2019 at approximately 1420 hours local time, officers with the Williamstown Police Department (WPD) responded to a report of an IED resembling a pipe bomb in a residential neighborhood. After making observations of the device, WPD officers requested assistance from the West Virginia State Police Bomb Disposal Unit. The unit rendered safe the device and collected unspecified evidence to be assessed by a state lab. There was no further information about the device, and the investigation is ongoing.

On 1 July 2019 at approximately 2000 hours local time, six children aged between 4 and 16 were wounded from an explosive device discovered on a playground in the village of Pashena Balka in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The National Police established that the unknown device exploded while the children were playing with it, seriously injuring at least one of the children. National Police investigators and the Bomb Disposal Unit assessed the scene and collected evidence.

On 28 June 2019 at approximately 1520 hours local time, North Little Rock Police arrested a 75-year-old suspect for throwing an improvised incendiary device (IID) described as a Molotov cocktail that injured a woman and a 2-year-old child during a dispute over a missing gas can. Following their argument, the suspect threw the device at the woman and child as they sat on their front porch. The child was hospitalized for non-life-threatening burns while the woman was treated at the scene.

On 26 June 2019 at approximately 1010 hours local time, the Desert Hot Springs Police Department arrested two 20-year-old residents after evidence of explosives and firearms manufacturing was discovered in their home. Detectives also recovered a device constructed from a seltzer bottle with a wick duct-taped to the lid. The suspects face numerous weapons-related charges, including the possession of material to make explosive devices.

On 28 June 2019, two person-borne IEDs (PBIEDs) detonated near Indanan in southern Sulu province. The first PBIED detonated at a checkpoint and the second inside a military camp past the checkpoint. Three soldiers and two civilians died, and nine soldiers were injured. The attack occurred as new soldiers were arriving to help bolster the military’s counterterrorism efforts in the Sulu province. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attacks.
