UPDATE Germany: Package IED Victim Staged Attack

On 23 April 2019, German authorities released a statement that the victim of the 18 April package IED explosion in Marburg had constructed the device himself. The 34-year-old man had a history of falsely reporting to be the victim of other crimes and admitted to investigators that he had constructed and initiated the device as part of an ongoing family dispute. It is unknown from reporting if the man will face charges.

On 22 April 2019, a lawn crew discovered a possible live tank round while digging in the yard of a private residence. A Barksdale Air Force Base Explosive Ordnance Disposal team responded to the scene and removed the ordnance to a safe location for a controlled detonation.

Florida: Man Makes and Launches IED into Neighbor’s Yard

On 20 April 2019, a 25-year-old man initiated an IED described as a pipe bomb that landed in his neighbor’s yard. The man told Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputies that he used stump remover mixed with sugar to make smoke bombs and shared a video of the outcome on social media. No one was injured in the incident, but the deputies evacuated the neighborhood as a precaution.

Sri Lanka: 8 Explosions Kill 290, Injure 500

On 21 April 2019, beginning at approximately 0845 hours local time, a series of eight coordinated attacks targeting Easter Sunday church services and hotels killed 290 people and injured another 500 victims across the island nation. According to an official at the U.S. Embassy in Colombo, at least four U.S. citizens were among the reported 39 foreign casualties. Authorities confirmed seven Sri Lankan suicide bombers conducted seven person-borne IED (PBIED) attacks.
