New York: Ordnance Discovered in Residence

TRIPwire, 25 May 2023 On 24 May 2023, the Westchester County Police Department (WCPD) Hazardous Devices Unit responded to a residence in White Plains after an unexploded ordnance was found during a basement cleanup. The ordnance was an Mk2 hand grenade with the safety pin partially out and was located on an “unstable platform.” The WCPD Hazardous Devices Unit removed the unexploded ordnance, placed it into an explosive containment trailer, and transported it for disposal. No further device details have been released, and no injuries were reported.

New Jersey: Explosive Device Thrown From Vehicle

TRIPwire, 24 May 2023 On 20 May 2023, at approximately 2130 hours local time, Lakewood Police Department officers responded to Squankum Road after an explosive device, described as a small object with a lit fuse was thrown from a vehicle and functioned in a wooded area. Pedestrians were 50 to 100 feet away, but no injuries were reported. A home security system captured video footage of two pickup trucks traveling on the road before the lit device was tossed from one of the vehicles. The investigation is ongoing.

New York: Pipe Bomb Found Outside Residence, 1 Arrested

On 11 May 2023, at approximately 1400 hours local time, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a residence on Upper Main Street following a report of a pipe bomb discovered outside the residence. No further device details were released. New York State Police Bomb Squad responded to assist and rendered the device safe. A male suspect was arrested and is facing several charges.

New York: IID Thrown at Individual, 1 Arrested

On 4 April 2023, a suspect threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, at an individual and attempted to set the individual on fire. No further device or incident details have been released. On 5 April, Jamestown Police Department officers attempted to conduct a warrant check at the 33-year-old male suspect’s residence on Winsor Street, but the suspect fled and was later arrested. The suspect is facing charges of criminal possession of a weapon and attempted assault, among other charges.

New York: 8 IEDs Found in Residence

On 13 December 2022, Erie County probation officers conducting a routine visit at the Hamburg residence of a 60-year-old male discovered eight IEDs, described as homemade tubular improvised explosives, inside the home. No further device details have been released. The suspect, who is on probation for endangering the welfare of two children, faces charges of criminal possession of a weapon. The incident remains under investigation.
