Florida: IIDs Thrown Into Barbershop, 1 Arrested

On 22 March 2024, at approximately 0340 hours local time, two individuals smashed the front window of a Miami barbershop in the area around West 1st Avenue and 49th Street and threw in two improvised incendiary devices (IIDs), described as Molotov cocktails, before fleeing the scene. The building sustained severe structural damage. Hialeah Police Department officers and Hialeah Fire Rescue responded, and fire crews extinguished the blaze.

Alabama: Explosive Device Functions Outside AG’s Office

On 26 February 2024, around 0820 hours local time, a suspicious package was discovered outside of the Alabama Attorney General’s office in Montgomery. Special Agents from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation responded, examined the package, and determined that it was an explosive device that had functioned on 24 February. No injuries or damages were reported. No further explosives-related details were provided, and the investigation is ongoing.

North Carolina: Illegal Pyrotechnic Functioned at Gas Station, 1 Arrested

On 11 February 2024, a 23-year-old man allegedly set off a pyrotechnic device near the pumps at a gas station in the 4900 block of Fallston Road in Lawndale. Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) deputies responded to the scene and determined that the suspect had set off a mortar-style pyrotechnic device, which is illegal in the state. CCSO deputies arrested the suspect on 17 February on charges including burning of certain buildings, possession of pyrotechnics, and going armed to the terror of the public.

Kentucky: Homemade Explosives Found on Campus, 1 Arrested

On 7 February 2024, at approximately 1811 hours local time, Lexington Police Department (LPD) officers responded to a residence in the 200 block of University Avenue near the University of Kentucky campus in response to a complaint made by a resident of the home. The resident alleged that her roommate was making her feel unsafe and had been acting suspiciously following an altercation between the two earlier in the day. The resident let LPD officers into the home and showed them the basement, where the officers discovered a jar labeled “Explosives.

Florida: IEDs, BMM Discovered in Home, 1 Arrested

In December 2023, Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) deputies responded to a residence on the 1400 block of Gallop Drive in Loxahatchee after receiving complaints that a 53-year-old man had threatened to harm members of the local homeowner's association. The PBSO Bomb Squad also responded to the scene, where they discovered several IEDs, described as clay-plugged cardboard tubes with fuses in them and a hollowed-out golf ball packed with explosive powder and a fuse.

South Carolina: Bomb Threat Against Sheriff Contained Viable IED Threat

On 2 February 2024, a 44-year-old man from Lexington allegedly sent an email from his personal account to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office threatening to use an IED against the Sheriff. The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) opened an investigation into the threat, consulted with SLED’s bomb squad, and determined that the suspect had identified a viable recipe for an IED in the emailed threat.

Florida: Suspected Explosive Device Discovered Along Highway Exit Ramp

On 25 January 2024, at approximately 0840 hours local time, Florida Highway Patrol responded to the shoulder of the Interstate 75 exit ramp leading to State Road 52 in Pasco County for a report of a suspected explosive device that had been discovered by contractors with the Florida Department of Transportation. Tampa Police Department and state bomb technicians were contacted and arrived at the scene to examine the device. The device was removed for further testing. No further device details were released. An investigation is ongoing.

North Carolina: IEDs Discovered During Traffic Stop, 1 Arrested

On 22 January 2024, a Rowan County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) deputy pulled over a vehicle for expired tags in the parking lot of a gas station on Long Ferry Road in the Salisbury area, noticed the 45-year-old male driver acting nervous, and requested a K9 unit. The K9 alerted to the presence of potential illegal narcotics in the vehicle, leading to a search. RCSO deputies discovered at least four IEDs in the glove box and also found ball bearings, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.

Georgia: IID Found in Home, 1 Arrested

On 17 January 2024, Gordon County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a home on Pleasant Hill Road in Calhoun after receiving a report of a suspicious package. Floyd County Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and examined the device, described as an improvised incendiary device (IID), before rendering it safe. No further device details were provided. On 18 January, deputies arrested a male suspect. The investigation is ongoing.
