Illinois: Pipe Bomb and BMM Discovered in Home, 1 Arrested

On 31 October 2024, at approximately 0530 hours local time, the Channahon Police Department and Illinois State Police Tactical Response Team (TRT) SWAT executed a search warrant at a residence on the 22000 block of Deal Avenue in Channahon, where an IED and bomb-making material (BMM) were found inside. The Illinois State Police WMD team, a Will County K9 Unit, and the DuPage County Bomb Squad were called to assist. Bomb technicians examined the IED, described as a pipe bomb with secured endcaps and a wick, and determined it was safe in its current state.

Indiana: IID Thrown at Home

On 17 October 2024, at approximately 0420 hours local time, Greenwood Police Department officers responded to a residence on the 200 block of Clayton Lane in Greenwood after an unknown suspect threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, against the garage, igniting a fire. The homeowner was able to extinguish the fire without incident. No injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.

Illinois: IEDs, 100 Firearms, and Ammunition Found in Residence, 1 Arrested

On 22 October 2024, media sources reported that on 26 September 2024, Homeland Security investigators and ATF agents discovered at least 4 IEDs, over 100 firearms, and thousands of rounds of ammunition at a home in Urbana during an investigation. From July to September 2024, investigators intercepted or observed packages of firearm components that were delivered to the 44-year-old male suspect’s bike business. Authorities obtained a search warrant for the suspect’s home, where they discovered four IEDs made from tiki torch containers with red fuses.

Ohio: Pyrotechnics Thrown From Vehicle at Firefighter on Road, 2 Arrested

On 4 October 2024, at approximately 0702 hours local time, Lucas County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) deputies responded to the 1500 block of S Crissey Road in Holland, after the fire chief reported to LCSO that an unknown individual had allegedly thrown pyrotechnics out of their vehicle at a firefighter driving to the station. No injuries were reported. The firefighter followed the vehicle and waited for deputies to arrive. LCSO deputies spoke to a man nearby, who eventually confessed to driving the vehicle while a second man threw the pyrotechnics out of the window.

Michigan: Pipe Bomb, Stolen Firearm, and Narcotics Found During Raid, 1 Arrested

On 7 October 2024, a 45-year-old man was arrested at his Saginaw home following a drug raid. Inside the home, Michigan State Police (MSP) and the Bay Area Narcotics Enforcement Team found a live pipe bomb, stolen Glock pistol, an ounce of crack cocaine, two ounces of fentanyl, and $8,000. MSP Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and rendered the pipe bomb safe without incident.

Indiana: Possible Explosive Material Discovered in Vehicle, 1 Arrested

On 13 October 2024, at approximately 2330 hours local time, Starke County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) deputies responded to a residence on the 6000 North Block of 1100 East in Grovertown for a report of a man who allegedly entered the home forcefully and began breaking items and waving a firearm. The 30-year-old suspect fled in a vehicle and was stopped and arrested near a truck stop on US-30 by SCSO and Marshall County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

Illinois: IED Discovered During Narcotics Investigation, 2 Arrested

On 11 October 2024, Stark County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) deputies served search warrants at four different locations across Stark County and discovered an IED at one site, in addition to methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and stolen property. The Peoria Police Department Bomb Squad was called to the scene to assist, and bomb technicians disposed of the IED. No further device details were released. A 44-year-old woman was arrested for possession of an explosive device and drug related charges, and a 47-year-old man was arrested on other charges.

Ohio: 2 IEDs Found in Man’s Belongings, 1 Arrested

On 18 September 2024, at approximately 1400 hours local time, a Kettering Police Department (KPD) officer approached a man acting strangely near a dumpster on Tabor Avenue in Kettering. The officer received permission to search the man’s belongings and discovered two IEDs, as shown in body camera footage published by news media on 27 September. The first IED was described as a small soft drink bottle sealed at the top, possessing a fuse, and containing what appeared to be nails and screws.

Michigan: Suspect Threatens Campaign Rally with Hoax Device, Charged with Possessing BMM

On 27 September 2024, a 65-year-old man drove up to a traffic checkpoint outside a Trump campaign rally in Walker and held up a bottle to City of Walker Police Department officers, claiming that it was a C4 explosive. The suspect then sped past the checkpoint and ignored police commands to stop until he reached a parking area, where he began to throw bags of fertilizer out of his vehicle to make it appear as though he was in possession of explosives. The suspect was arrested, and a search of his vehicle did not result in the discovery of any explosives.

Ohio: Hand Grenade Removed from Residence

On 23 September 2024, at approximately 1440 hours local time, the Dayton Police Department and bomb squad responded to a home on North Cherrywood Avenue after the homeowner discovered a suspicious item during renovations. The homeowner discovered the item, which appeared to be a hand grenade, after it was knocked over by the homeowner’s cat. Bomb squad technicians removed the hand grenade and disposed of it via controlled detonation. No further device details have been released.
