Indiana: 5 IEDs Found in Residence, 1 Arrested

On 22 September 2024, Connersville Police Department (CPD) officers responded to Ohio Avenue in Connersville for reports of a gunshot being fired into an unoccupied vehicle. After interviewing neighbors about the incident, police identified a 49-year-old male suspect and went to his residence, where they located a vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting. CPD officers were granted a search warrant for the residence, where they found five suspected IEDs.

Michigan: Man Arrested for Hoax VBIED

On 10 September 2024, at approximately 0905 hours local time, Macomb County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies responded to a mobile home park on the 24000 block of Bradford Drive in Harrison Township for a report of a suspicious situation. At the scene, officers discovered a potential vehicle-borne IED (VBIED). The vehicle had a propane tank placed in the front seat with electrical wiring running from the tank to the vehicle’s middle console, as well as a second tank affixed to the driver’s side front wheel with copper wire running underneath the car.

Michigan: Possible Grenade Discovered After Police Chase, 3 Arrested

On 9 September 2024, at approximately 1600 hours local time, Saginaw Police Department officers assisted the Michigan State Police Fugitive Team in apprehending a 40-year-old man from Kentucky who was wanted on outstanding warrants after he led officers on a police chase. The suspect was apprehended in the East Washington and Towerline Road area of Buena Vista Township, and while searching the vehicle, authorities discovered a possible grenade.

Illinois: Man Throws IIDs During Standoff with Police, 1 Arrested

On 4 September 2024, at approximately 1038 hours local time, Freeport Police Department officers responded to an apartment complex on the 600 block of N. Walnut Avenue in Freeport for reports of a woman allegedly being held against her will. Officers removed the woman from the apartment and learned that the male suspect had firearms and was making threats. The suspect barricaded himself in the apartment, and at approximately 1350 hours, he discharged a firearm out of the 10th-floor apartment window and threw IIDs, described as Molotov cocktails. No injuries were reported.

Ohio: Explosive Device Functioned in Parked Car

On 27 August 2024, at approximately 1323 hours local time, Columbus Division of Fire crews and bomb squad technicians responded to reports of an explosion and subsequent fire in a car parked in an alley near a residence on the 2300 block of South 6th Street in Columbus. Officials determined that an explosive device functioned in the vehicle, which was unoccupied at the time. Three individuals were initially detained for questioning and released with no charges filed. The ATF and FBI are assisting with the ongoing investigation.

Ohio: Chemical Overpressure Device Remnants Discovered after Series of Explosions in Park

On 9 August 2024, at approximately 2309 hours local time, Streetsboro Police Department officers responded to a park in Streetsboro after a nearby resident heard an explosion and reported hearing similar explosions on three other occasions. Police officers discovered the remains of several plastic containers and an intact plastic jug filled with an unknown liquid in the parking lot. Initial evaluations by investigators determined that the devices were chemical overpressure devices described as “Drano bombs.” Two additional devices that had not yet functioned were also found.

Michigan: Man Injured After Functioning Explosive Device in Vehicle

On 15 August 2024, at approximately 1343 hours local time, a man was seen on camera walking up to an SUV parked at a U.S. Post Office in the 17300 block of Harper Avenue in Detroit, breaking the window, and placing an explosive device inside the vehicle. The suspect functioned the device and was thrown against an adjacent vehicle by the resulting explosion. The suspect fled the scene and was seen in camera footage as having sustained visible injuries. The explosion ignited a fire that burned four vehicles and damaged six.

Ohio: Man Arrested for Assaulting and Threatening Woman with IID

On 6 August 2024, Columbus Police Department officers responded to an apartment building on the 500 block of N. Nelson Road in Columbus after a man allegedly assaulted a woman and threatened her with an improvised incendiary device (IID). During this incident, the suspect burned parts of a dish towel and functioned an IID comprising a bottle of grain alcohol and a piece of the towel over the victim’s head. At the scene, police officers found two dish towels and a lighter near the bottle of grain alcohol.

Michigan: Pyrotechnic Functioned on Porch

On 10 August 2024, at approximately 0100 hours local time, video footage captured two male teenagers functioning a pyrotechnic on the front porch of a residence on the 4800 block of West Village Trail in Ada. The suspects, who appeared to be filming themselves, knocked on the door of the home before functioning the pyrotechnic and fleeing the scene. The explosion damaged the home and left behind a “powder-like substance.” No further details have been released. Kent County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating.

Illinois: Grenade Found in Home

On 7 August 2024, at approximately 1150 hours local time, Chicago Police Department Bomb Squad technicians responded to the 4700 block of South Marshfield Avenue for reports of a suspicious object. Technicians examined the object, determined it was a viable explosive described as a grenade, and removed it from the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
