On April 1, 2025, two individuals were arrested in connection with improvised explosive devices (IEDs) found at a home in Boise, Idaho. The Boise Police Department conducted an investigation, which led to the discovery of the IEDs and the subsequent arrests. According to Boise Police, when one suspect was approached by officers, they "recklessly” handled one of the IEDs by shaking it and dropping it in close proximity to the officer.

On April 10, 2025, at approximately 1300 hours local time, a man was arrested in Vancouver, Washington, after police found an IED and a firearm in his backpack. Officers responded to the Bagley Downs neighborhood, where they located the suspect, who was wanted on multiple warrants.

Oregon: Improvised Explosive Device Discovered on Public Road

On April 23, 2025, in La Grande, Oregon, a suspicious device was reported near Jefferson Avenue and Greenwood Street. The La Grande Police Department responded to the scene and secured the area. The Oregon State Police Bomb Squad (OSPBS) was called in to investigate the device and determined it was an IED.

Washington: 8 IEDs Discovered in Apartment and Vehicle, 1 Arrested

On 2 January 2025, Airway Heights Police Department officers and Stevens County Sheriff’s Office deputies discovered an IED while searching a residence on the 13000 block of West 6th Avenue in Airway Heights during an identity theft investigation. Explosive Disposal Unit technicians from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office and Spokane Police Department were called to remove the explosive device, described as a “2-foot-long pipe-shaped object with fuses sticking out of the top.” Authorities also discovered seven additional IEDs in the suspect’s vehicle.

Idaho: Suspect Attempts to Detonate IED Near Train Car, 1 Arrested

On 1 January 2025, at approximately 1800 hours local time, Payette Police Department officers responded to the 600 block of North 8th Street in Payette following reports that an individual was attempting to initiate an IED—described as a pipe bomb made from PVC pipe that was filled with black powder taken out of pyrotechnics—near a train car. The Nampa Police Department’s Bomb Squad and FBI were called to the scene to assist. Bomb technicians removed the device and disposed of it via a controlled detonation.

Idaho: Non-Functional IED Removed from Vehicle, 1 Arrested

On 15 December 2024, at approximately 0157 hours local time, Idaho State Police (ISP) troopers conducted a traffic stop near Heyburn Avenue and Blue Lakes Boulevard in Twin Falls. While inspecting the vehicle, officers discovered what was described as a “suspicious black tube” and a firearm. ISP called the Twin Falls Police Department Bomb Squad for assistance. Bomb technicians determined that the device was an incomplete IED containing buckshot and explosive powder and removed it from the scene.

Oregon: IID Thrown at Residence, 1 Arrested

On 7 November 2024, at approximately 0000 hours local time, Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers and fire crews responded to a home on the 2200 block of SE Salmon Street in Portland for a report of a fire. The fire was extinguished, and investigators determined that an IID, described as a Molotov cocktail, had been thrown on the home’s porch. Two adults and two children were inside at the time of the fire, but no injuries were reported.

On 7 November 2024, at approximately 0000 hours local time, Portland Fire and Rescue responded following reports of a fire at a residence on the 2200 block of Southeast Salmon Street in Portland. Authorities found that the suspect allegedly threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a “Molotov cocktail–like device,” on the front porch of the home, starting the fire. Portland Fire Bureau and Arson Investigators determined that the fire was intentionally set with an accelerant. No injuries were reported, but the home sustained moderate damage.

Washington: Incendiary Device Used in Ballot Box Fire

On 28 October 2024, at approximately 0400 hours local time, Vancouver Police Department (VPD) officers responded following a report of smoke and fire at a ballot box near Southeast 164th Avenue in Vancouver. At the scene, officers found an incendiary device that had been functioned on the side of the ballot box, which was still on fire. First responders extinguished the flames and requested the assistance of VPD’s Metro Explosive Device Unit (MEDU). MEDU technicians responded to the scene and collected the remnants of the incendiary device. No injuries were reported.

On 28 October 2024, at approximately 0330 hours local time, Portland Police Bureau (PPB) Central Precinct officers responded to reports of a fire at a ballot box on the 1000 block of Southeast Morrison Street in Portland. The fire was extinguished by security personnel who worked in the area. Responding officers examined the ballot box, determined that the fire was ignited by an incendiary device functioned in the box, and called the PPB’s Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) for assistance. EDU technicians responded and removed the remnants of the device.
