Washington: IED Discovered at Residence, 1 Arrested

On 15 October 2024, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Bellingham Police Department officers executed a search warrant at an alleged drug dealer’s residence on Lakeway Drive in Bellingham and discovered an unspecified IED, a stolen firearm, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and $3,000 in cash. The IED was removed from the residence and taken to a police station for further investigation. A 46-year-old male suspect was arrested.

Washington: 3 IEDs Discovered after Police Chase, 2 Arrested

On 12 October 2024, Washington State Patrol officers discovered an idling vehicle with the driver and passenger sleeping inside, along with drug paraphernalia, on the 3500 block of 108th Avenue in Bellevue. The driver fled the scene, and the vehicle was stopped by officers following a car chase on I-90 West. Both suspects attempted to flee on foot and were apprehended and arrested.  Bomb squads from the Bellevue Police Department, Washington State Patrol, King County, FBI, and ATF responded after officers found two IEDs in the vehicle. No additional device information was provided.

Oregon: Pipe Bomb Discovered During Traffic Stop, 1 Arrested

On 10 October 2024, Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a traffic stop outside Milton-Freewater and arrested the driver for outstanding felony warrants. While searching the vehicle, deputies discovered a pipe bomb inside the glove compartment. The Oregon State Police Bomb Squad was called to assist. Bomb squad technicians x-rayed the device, confirmed it was filled with an unknown substance, and removed it from the vehicle before rendering the pipe bomb safe without incident.

Idaho UPDATE: Pipe Bombs Discovered in Residence

On 26 September 2024, Pocatello Police Department (PPD) officers responded to a residence on the 300 block of Roosevelt Avenue in Pocatello after a contractor working in the home observed possible explosive devices in a cardboard box and multiple firearms. PPD officers examined the explosive devices, described as 15 to 20 pipe bombs constructed with “rigid pipes, 6 to 7 inches long, with end caps at both ends, and a fuse protruding from one end.” The Idaho Falls Police Bomb Squad was called to assist in handling the IEDs. No additional IED details were released.

Idaho: Modified Pyrotechnics Found During Traffic Stop, 1 Arrested

On 23 September 2024, at approximately 1630 hours local time, Rexburg Police Department officers discovered an IED in a vehicle during a traffic stop near Second West and Main St in Rexburg. The IED consisted of two modified pyrotechnics described as “commercial mortars” that had been removed from their original packaging and taped together with a long fuse. The Idaho Falls Regional Bomb Squad was called to assist and removed the pyrotechnics without incident. A K-9 unit performed a final search of the vehicle and found no additional hazardous materials.

Washington: IED Found after Multiple Explosions Reported

On 30 August 2024, Mason County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies responded to the Star Lake neighborhood in Elma for a report of an explosive device. MCSO deputies determined that the device was a viable IED and learned from community members that three other explosives had been functioned in the neighborhood within the previous 12 hours. Washington State Patrol (WSP) Bomb Squad technicians responded to the scene and disposed of the device. Authorities determined that an unidentified suspect or suspects had functioned the devices from their vehicle while driving through the area.

Washington: Grocery Store Destroyed by IID

On 24 August 2024, at approximately 0300 hours local time, multiple fire departments responded to a fire at a grocery store on the 5300 block of 4th street in Renton. Investigators determined that the fire was caused by an unspecified improvised incendiary device (IID) that functioned at the rear of the store. The blaze caused significant damage to the structure of the building and its contents. The investigation is ongoing.

Washington: IID Ignited in Vehicle Outside Home

On 6 August 2024, at approximately 0436 hours local time, an unidentified suspect emplaced an improvised incendiary device (IID) in a vehicle parked outside a Sumner home, which ignited as the suspect fled the scene. The vehicle sustained major damage to both the interior and exterior. The owner witnessed the vehicle engulfed in smoke before it exploded and attempted to extinguish the fire as Sumner Police Department officers and East Pierce Fire & Rescue crews arrived to prevent damage to the home. The resident believes that the attack was targeted toward his children.

Oregon: Two Explosive Devices Functioned in Neighborhood, Suspect Arrested

On 5 August 2024, at approximately 0930 hours local time, Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers responded to the 1900 block of NE 141st Avenue for reports of a loud explosion and determined an explosive device had functioned in a vehicle but the driver had been able to drive away. The driver and the vehicle returned several hours later, at approximately 1230 hours, and a second explosive device was functioned, leading PPB officers to return to the scene. The Metro Explosive Disposal Unit, FBI, and ATF responded to assist and cleared the vehicle and a suspicious bag.

Idaho: Explosive Devices and Chemicals Found at Residence, 1 Arrested

On 24 July 2024, Kuna Police Department officers responded to a residence near East 4th Street and Orchard Avenue in Kuna, where they discovered explosive devices and suspicious chemicals in the home's garage. The Boise Police Department Bomb Squad, FBI, and Idaho National Guard 101st Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team were called in to assess, process, and remove the devices and chemicals. The homeowner, a 37-year-old man, was not present during the investigation.
