El Salvador: IEDs and Ammonium Nitrate Seized During Raid Connected to Presidential Bomb Plot

On 30 May 2024, El Salvador’s National Police arrested seven suspects who had been involved in the nation’s 1980-1992 civil war after IEDs described as “small cylinders of explosives with fuses” and sacks of ammonium nitrate were found during a raid on a former rebel territory. The police posted images of the seized explosives to social media, alongside a note that the plot was intended to target gas stations, supermarkets, and government buildings. The suspects were arrested prior to the President’s inauguration on 1 June.
