El Salvador: IEDs and Ammonium Nitrate Seized During Raid Connected to Presidential Bomb Plot

On 30 May 2024, El Salvador’s National Police arrested seven suspects who had been involved in the nation’s 1980-1992 civil war after IEDs described as “small cylinders of explosives with fuses” and sacks of ammonium nitrate were found during a raid on a former rebel territory. The police posted images of the seized explosives to social media, alongside a note that the plot was intended to target gas stations, supermarkets, and government buildings. The suspects were arrested prior to the President’s inauguration on 1 June.

Austria: IED Discovered in Vehicle After Follow-Up Investigation, 1 Arrested

On 29 May 2024, a suspected bomb-maker was arrested for a string of attempted explosive device attacks on Jehovah's Witnesses in Graz-Umgebung, Styria, since August 2023. The suspect claimed to have targeted Jehovah’s Witnesses as a diversion to kill his ex-wife and also claimed to have attached an IED to his ex-wife's vehicle. Initial investigation of the vehicle only found a magnet used to attach the IED but no explosive device. On 3 June, investigators found the IED hidden behind some shoring at the rear of vehicle after lifting the car onto a platform.

Tennessee: IED and BMM Found While Searching Home, 1 Arrested

On 5 June 2024, at approximately 1300 hours local time, Henry County Sheriff's Department (HCSD) deputies, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation special agents and the ATF arrested a 53-year-old male suspect after discovering an IED while searching his Buchanan residence. HCSD deputies initially responded to a 911 call made by the suspect reporting a drug overdose. Upon arrival, deputies discovered an IED described as a PVC pipe with black wires taped to it on the home's front porch.

Pennsylvania: Suspect Assaults Man and Emplaces IED Under Car, 1 Arrested

On the evening of 2 June 2024, a 31-year-old male suspect threw a pyrotechnic device outside of his ex-girlfriend’s home in Ross Township after a gathering, causing a bush to ignite. The suspect departed the scene and later returned to assault another man who attended the gathering, throwing a whiskey bottle and beating him with brass knuckles. The suspect reportedly attacked the man because of his interactions with the suspect’s ex-girlfriend. Ross Township Police responded the following morning and discovered an IED under the victim’s car in the driveway.

New York: Incendiary Device Damages Mailbox, 2 Arrested

On 27 April 2024, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office deputies discovered that an incendiary device had damaged a mailbox after responding to reports of a loud noise at a residence in Salina. No injuries were reported, and no further device details were provided. An investigation found that the incident stemmed from a previous dispute. On 30 May 2024, two male suspects, ages 19 and 21, were arrested and charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon, possession of an explosive device with intent, and misdemeanor criminal mischief.

California: Stockpile of Pyrotechnics Found in Garage

On 29 May 2024, at approximately 1900 hours local time, Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers executing a search warrant discovered 2,000 lb of pyrotechnics while searching the garage of a home in the 1600 block of West 146th Street. LAPD Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and removed the pyrotechnics. No injuries were reported.

Germany: 2 Explosive Devices Functioned Outside ATMs

On 23 May 2024, at approximately 0130 hours local time, three unidentified suspects used explosive devices against two ATMs at a bank in Friedrichroda in the district of Gotha, Thuringia, before fleeing the scene. It is unclear how much money was stolen. Witnesses reported hearing the two explosions, which destroyed the ATMs and the building housing them. No injuries were reported. No additional devices were discovered, and no device related details have been released. The investigation is ongoing.

Ecuador: Explosive Device Functioned During Attack on Government Building

On 28 May 2024, an unspecified explosive device was functioned as a part of a series of attacks against the municipality of Durán, causing one vehicle to explode. No further device details were provided. At least one Durán government building sustained minor damage, but no injuries were reported. Durán has a prevalence of narcotics production and trafficking and has experienced significant violence as a result.

Cyprus: Weapons and Explosives Cache Found in Cemetery

On 20 May 2024, local authorities discovered a cache of explosives and drugs buried in a cemetery in Oroklini. The cache consisted of IEDs, one of which was an armed radio controlled IED (RCIED) with a cell phone; a rocket launcher with three munitions; several cartridges; and military grade firearms. Two male suspects, ages 46 and 35, were arrested in connection with the discovery. The older suspect was previously observed by police engaging in suspicious activity at the cemetery.
