California: Pipe Bomb Discovered at Recycling Center

On 17 June 2024, at approximately 1115 hours local time, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) deputies discovered an explosive device while responding to a recycling center in North Highlands after an employee reported finding a suspicious device. The SCSO EOD Unit responded to assist and examined the device, described as a commercial pyrotechnic that had been converted into a pipe bomb, before destroying it via a controlled detonation. Investigators stated that the device had been deliberately emplaced at the center to cause damage. No further details were provided.

California: IID Thrown into Fast-Food Restaurant, 1 Arrested

On 12 June 2024, at approximately 0240 hours local time, a man was seen allegedly tossing an improvised incendiary device (IID) into the window of a fast-food restaurant on Ranch Drive in Milpitas. No further device details have been released. The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle and was reported to police shortly after the incident. Milpitas Fire Department personnel responded to the restaurant and extinguished the fire.

Arizona: Explosive Device Thrown at Front Door of Home, 1 Injured

On 13 June 2024, at approximately 2130 hours local time, an unknown suspect threw an unspecified explosive device at the front door of a residence near Country Club Drive and West Guadalupe Road in Mesa, causing an explosion. The home incurred substantial damage as the front door, windows, and walls of the entrance were all damaged in the blast. Mesa Police Department officers responded and conducted a post-blast analysis of the scene and believe a large pyrotechnic or another explosive device caused the explosion.

On 15 June 2024, at approximately 0345 hours local time, four unknown suspects threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a “firebomb,” into a vehicle parked on the street outside the owner’s home in Dannevirke, Manawatū-Whanganui, North Island. Germany: Suspect Brandishes IID During Soccer Fan Parade

On 16 June 2024, at approximately 1300 hours local time, local police officers responded to the St. Pauli district of Hamburg and shot a 39-year-old man who was brandishing an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, and a pickaxe near Dutch soccer fans who had gathered for a fan parade prior to the start of a Euro 2024 soccer game. France: Suspect with Explosives Arrested in Paris, 1 Injured

On 6 June 2024, French police arrested a 26-year-old Russian-Ukrainian male suspect following an explosion in a hotel room near Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. The suspect, who sustained severe burns, claimed to be engaged in the fabrication of homemade batteries for cell phones at the time of the incident. Investigators determined an IED the suspect was constructing had functioned. During a search of his room, investigators discovered evidence of IED manufacture and bomb-making material (BMM), described as triacetone triperoxide (TATP), as well as weapons and false passports.

Georgia: IID Thrown at Home

On 31 May 2024, home surveillance footage captured an unknown person throwing an improvised incendiary device (IID) at a home on the 3400 block of Springside Drive in DeKalb County before fleeing the scene. The breaking of a window awoke the homeowner, and they extinguished the fire before it spread beyond the curtains. No injuries were reported. No further device details have been released, and an investigation is ongoing.

California: 140 Lbs. of Pyrotechnics, Drugs Found While Searching Home, 1 Arrested

On 2 June 2024, at approximately 1045 hours local time, San Mateo Police Department officers responded to a home on the 300 block of North Grant Street after receiving reports of a disturbance involving a couple sitting in a vehicle near the home. Officers searched the vehicle and discovered pyrotechnics and marijuana. A subsequent search of the home found 140 lbs. of pyrotechnics, 9 lbs. of marijuana, methamphetamine and an unregistered pistol with a silencer and ammunition.

California: Police Car Targeted with IID

On 1 June 2024, at approximately 0500 hours local time, an unidentified suspect at the University of California at Berkeley (UC) emplaced an improvised incendiary device (IID) underneath the back wheel of a police car, between the tire and fuel tank, and functioned it. UC Police responded and are leading the ongoing investigation. An anonymous online source took credit for the attack, claiming it was retaliation for the university’s response to the Israel-Hamas war. No further device-related details were provided.
