Ireland: IED Emplaced at Private Residence

On 1 August 2019 at approximately 0900 hours local time, the Gardai responded to a private residence after the residents reported a suspicious device on their driveway. The device consisted of a metal pipe, and the Gardai requested assistance from the Defence Forces’ army bomb disposal team. The team confirmed the device was an IED and rendered it safe. The device components were removed from the scene for further inspection, and the investigation is ongoing.

Afghanistan: Roadside IED Kills 34 Bus Passengers

On 31 July 2019, a roadside IED detonated in Farah Province as a passenger bus drove by on the major Kandahar-Herat highway. A government spokesperson confirmed 34 civilians died and 17 sustained injuries. Police have not released any details about the device. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but authorities have blamed the Taliban and believe the group intended to target security forces. A Taliban spokesperson denied the group was involved in the incident.

Israel: IED Emplaced at Holy Site

On 29 July 2019, Israel Defense Force (IDF) soldiers discovered an IED emplaced at the holy site of Joseph’s Tomb. The IDF was conducting a security check of the site prior to the monthly pilgrimage by Jewish worshippers when they discovered the device, which was described as a pipe bomb. The IDF rendered safe the device in a controlled detonation. The site is under Israeli control but in an area contested by Palestinians.

Utah: Attempted IID Attack Targeted Police

On 27 July 2019, officers from the Salt Lake City Police Department responding to a suspicious person call were targeted in an improvised incendiary device (IID) attack. When officers tried to initiate contact with the male suspect, who also had a large knife in his possession, he threw a bag at them that contained an ignited Molotov cocktail-type device, which failed to initiate. Police officers were able to neutralize the threat using non-lethal means and arrested the individual.
