Arizona: Hoax Device Emplaced at County Courthouse

On 29 July 2019, a witness reported a suspicious device located behind Kingman’s Mohave County Courthouse. The Kingman Bomb Squad inspected the device, described as a box fashioned with protruding wires, and confirmed it contained no explosive components. The investigation is ongoing as the device was deliberately emplaced and intended to cause alarm.

Afghanistan: VBIED Attack Results in 26 Casualties

On 30 July 2019, a vehicle-borne IED (VBIED) utilizing a motorcycle detonated in the market of Spin Boladak in Kandahar Province, along the border with Pakistan. Three children died in the blast and at least 23 other civilians sustained injuries. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but local authorities suspect the Taliban may be responsible as the group is very active in Kandahar Province.

Costa Rica: IED Damages Commercial Building

On 28 July 2019 at approximately 2330 hours local time, three male suspects emplaced and detonated an IED in front of a business in San Jose. The explosion caused minor damage to the building and broke a window. The IED was described by Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) as a “fire extinguisher tube that could be activated remotely and may have been homemade.” The targeted business received multiple threats in the past months, and the OIJ is investigating the incident and threats.

Netherlands: ATM Explosion Leads to Evacuations

On 29 July 2019 at approximately 0330 hours local time, an explosive device detonated on an ATM in Venlo, near the border with Germany. The Limburg Police and Ministry of Defense’s explosive disposal department responded to the scene and evacuated 80 homes and a hotel in the area while they searched for additional explosives. No other explosive devices were discovered. Police have not released details about the extent of the damage caused by the explosion.

Wisconsin: Explosive Device Discovered In Vehicle at Residence

On 27 July 2019, deputies from the Wood County Sheriff’s Department discovered an IED in a vehicle parked in the backyard of a private residence during an investigation. The Marathon-Oneida County Bomb Squad responded to the scene, determined the IED was inactive, and rendered safe the device.

Australia: Two Pipe Bombs Rendered Safe

On 28 July 2019 at approximately 0500 hours local time, Victoria Police responded to a report of an unknown explosive device in a private residence in Eltham, northeast of Melbourne. While searching the property, police discovered two IEDs described as pipe bombs. Police cordoned off the surrounding area as a Bomb Response Unit responded to the scene and rendered safe both devices. Police have not released any information about the devices but announced there was no threat to public safety.
