New Zealand: Possible IED Destroys Mailbox

On 22 February 2019, New Zealand Police officers responded to the scene of a reported IED that functioned in the Western Springs neighborhood of Auckland, where they found a destroyed mailbox and a suspicious item with visible wires and a possible protruding fuse. A New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team responded to the suspected pipe bomb, but NZDF EOD technicians determined that the item was nonhazardous. Investigation into the cause of the mailbox destruction is ongoing.

Iran: 13 ISIS Members Arrested with Cache

On 21 February 2019, the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and National Security announced the disruption of an alleged ISIS plot to conduct multiple terrorist attacks and assassinations in the western province of Kordestan. Security forces seized a cache containing weapons, ammunition, and an unspecified number of remotely initiated explosive devices. In the same operation, security forces also arrested 13 individuals, several of whom reportedly received military training outside of Iran.

On 20 February 2019 at approximately 0154 hours local time, two unidentified males used an IED in an attempt to rob an ATM in the eastern town of Chanthaburi. The device, described by police as a pipe bomb, functioned but failed to open the ATM. The two men then fled the scene.

New York: Court Documents Detail Attack Pl

On 22 January 2019, three adult male suspects and one 16-year-old male suspect were arrested by Greece Police and charged with six felony counts for possessing and intending to use IEDs and firearms to attack a Muslim community. Court documents released after the four suspects’ indictment provide further details of the attack plan. The 16-year-old suspect built the IEDs, and, according to the FBI, two of the three devices were capable of detonating and a third was near completion.

Kentucky: IED Discovered in Mailbox

On 20 February 2019, Kentucky State Police (KSP) officers responded to reports of an IED emplaced in a mailbox in Glasgow. The KSP Hazardous Devices Unit rendered safe the device. According to KSP, the device was the size of a film canister and not life-threatening. KSP and the U.S. Postal Service continue to investigate the incident.

Ireland: Live Grenade Discovered in Driveway of Residence

On 23 February 2019, Garda officers responded to the discovery of a malfunctioned hand grenade with its pin removed in the driveway of a residence in the southern town of Mitchelstown. An Irish Defence Forces Ordnance Corps team determined the device was viable and rendered it safe. An investigation into the origin of the grenade is underway, but a Garda spokesperson told reporters that the residence was likely not the intended target.

Maryland: Explosion Destroys Mailbox

On 23 February 2019 at approximately 0900 hours, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene of an explosion in Reisterstown that destroyed a mailbox. No injuries were reported, but the explosion caused approximately $125 in property damage. The Office of the State Fire Marshal is currently investigating the source of the explosion.
