Virginia: Man Arrested on Explosive Charges after Investigation into Noise Complaints

On 30 August 2024, the Arlington County Fire Department Office of the Fire Marshal, ATF agents, Arlington County Police Department officers, and bomb squad technicians arrested a 77-year-old male suspect after serving a search warrant at the suspect’s home on the 5700 block of Washington Boulevard in Arlington. The search was conducted in response to an investigation beginning on 20 August 2024 concerning periodic explosions reported nightly and in the early morning. No further details were provided on the materials discovered in the home.

Pennsylvania: Pyrotechnics Found During Bethlehem Parade

On 3 August 2024, at approximately 2130 hours local time, Bethlehem Police Department officers responded to a music festival on First Street in Bethlehem after a pyrotechnic was discovered. Officers removed the pyrotechnic, described as a commercial grade firework.

Pennsylvania: Suspect Assaults Man and Emplaces IED Under Car, 1 Arrested

On the evening of 2 June 2024, a 31-year-old male suspect threw a pyrotechnic device outside of his ex-girlfriend’s home in Ross Township after a gathering, causing a bush to ignite. The suspect departed the scene and later returned to assault another man who attended the gathering, throwing a whiskey bottle and beating him with brass knuckles. The suspect reportedly attacked the man because of his interactions with the suspect’s ex-girlfriend. Ross Township Police responded the following morning and discovered an IED under the victim’s car in the driveway.

Pennsylvania: IEDs and BMM Found in Apartment Building

On 26 April 2024, Pittsburgh Police Department officers and Bomb Squad technicians responded to an apartment on Forbes Avenue after suspicious powders were discovered inside the building among an evicted resident’s belongings. Authorities discovered 32 IEDs, along with bomb-making material (BMM), described as sulfur powder, aluminum powder, potassium nitrate, air float charcoal, and fuses. Technicians removed 32 separate devices from the scene and safely disposed of them.

Pennsylvania: 2 Explosive Devices Discovered inside Residence

TRIPwire, 1 June 2023 On 31 May 2023, at approximately 1500 hours local time, Girardville Fire Department (GFD), Girardville Police Department, and Borough Police Department officers responded to a residence on West Main Street after an explosive device, described as a homemade pipe bomb with signs of electrical detonation, was discovered by a building maintenance worker in the ceiling of a vacant apartment. FBI and State Police Bomb Squad technicians responded to the scene and rendered the device safe inside the apartment.

Pennsylvania: 2 Pipe Bombs Discovered in Residence

TRIPwire, 26 May 2023 On 25 May 2023, Morrisville Police Department officers, Bucks County detectives, the Philadelphia Bomb Squad, and federal authorities responded to a residence on South Pennsylvania Avenue and recovered what appeared to be two PVC pipe bombs inside. The Philadelphia Bomb Squad removed the devices from the residence. The apparent pipe bombs will be examined by the bomb squad, the ATF, and the FBI. No further device details have been released, and there were no injuries. No arrests have been announced. The investigation is ongoing.

Pennsylvania: 3 Pipe Bombs Brought Into Police Station

On 9 May 2023, at approximately 1100 hours local time, a man brought a bag containing three pipe bombs into the public safety building of the Harrisburg Police Department (HPD), claiming he found them on the street. The HPD’s K9 team and the Pennsylvania State Police bomb squad responded to assist. Bomb technicians used a robot to retrieve the devices before removing them from the scene to be rendered safe. No further device details were provided. The investigation is ongoing.
