Ohio: Explosive Device Thrown at Home

On 28 July 2024, according to media reporting, an unidentified suspect threw an explosive device into the front yard of a residence on the 3000 block of Avis Road in Summit County, prompting the response of Springfield Township Police Department officers. The device functioned, damaging a front window, but no injuries were reported. The home had previously been targeted on 17 July when a rock was thrown through a window, though it is unclear if the two incidents are connected. The investigation is ongoing.

Michigan: IED Discovered During Traffic Stop, 2 Arrested

On 17 July 2024, at approximately 2240 hours local time, Wyandotte Police Department (WPD) officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a minor violation. Officers investigated the vehicle after the two male occupants made suspicious, inconsistent statements and discovered cocaine and an IED, pictured as a cylindrical device wrapped in duct tape with a green fuse protruding from it. WPD officers contacted the Dearborn Police Department Bomb Squad for assistance.

Ohio: Pipe Bomb Found by Magnet Fishing

On 20 July 2024, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the area of State Route 590 and Toussaint North Road for a reported explosive device found by magnet fisherman. Deputies determined that the object resembled a pipe bomb. Toledo Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and rendered the device safe.

Indiana: Pyrotechnic Device Damages “Little Library”

On 20 July 2024, at approximately 0024 hours local time, Highland Police Department officers responded to Brantwood Park after an unidentified suspect functioned a pyrotechnic device, destroying a “Little Library” book exchange stand and scattering debris and books across the surrounding area. Residents reported that two similar incidents recently occurred in the same location. No further device-related details were provided. The investigation is ongoing.

Ohio: IED Functions, Damaging Multiple Homes

On 4 July 2024, at approximately 2245 hours local time, the Brookfield Police Department (BPD) received several reports of an explosion on the 7900 Block of Bud Street in Masury. The following morning, police received additional reports of broken windows. According to the BPD, they have not yet determined the cause of the blast, but the extent of the damages likely indicates a modified pyrotechnic device or IED. At least six homes were damaged. The investigation is ongoing.

Minnesota: Pipe Bomb Discovered During Traffic Stop, 1 Arrested

On 5 July 2024, at approximately 1330 hours local time, an Albert Lea Police Department officer attempted to stop a vehicle on Hammer Road and Sorenson Road for a traffic violation. After failing to yield to the officer’s emergency lights and siren, the vehicle stopped on Paradise Road. The officer placed the 48-year-old male driver of the car under arrest for driving on a revoked driver’s license, suspected driving under the influence of a controlled substance, and fleeing the officer in a motor vehicle.

Michigan: Juveniles Function Pyrotechnic Device Indoors, 2 Injured

On 27 June 2024, at approximately 1700 hours local time, two 11-year-old girls functioned a pyrotechnic device at their home in River Rogue, resulting in serious injuries. The children discovered a pyrotechnic device in the house and, believing it to be a sparkler, lit it in a bathroom. After realizing the device was not a sparkler, they attempted to remove the device from the home; however, it functioned, severely injuring one girl’s hand and burning the other child.

Minnesota: Bucket of IIDs Brought to Hospital, 1 Arrested

On 20 June 2024, at approximately 0930 hours local time, hospital security staff requested assistance from an off-duty Saint Paul Police Department officer to assist with a man who parked a vehicle outside the hospital entrance and was talking with security staff. Security alerted police to the possibility of improvised incendiary devices (IIDs), described as Molotov cocktails, in the vehicle. The officer looked in the vehicle and saw a bucket of containers with an unknown fluid and rags stuffed in the top, alongside a crossbow and an arrow.

Ohio: HME Functioned at Residence, 1 Arrested

On 8 June 2024, police responded to the 2100 block of Rollingridge Lane in Green Township after a suspect functioned homemade pyrotechnics, damaging a home and truck. The suspect admitted to using a mixture of potassium chlorate and other chemicals purchased online to manufacture the explosive mixture, which he placed in a log. The 18-year-old suspect claimed he was trying to build his own firework. He was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of dangerous ordnance and criminal damaging and endangering.

Michigan: IID Thrown at Residence, 1 Arrested

On 14 June 2024, Menominee Police Department officers arrested a 45-year-old male suspect after he allegedly threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, at a residence located on the 1200 block of West Drive in Menominee. The suspect is facing terrorism, assault with the intent to murder, possession of an expose, and arson charges.
