Illinois: IIDs Thrown Through Window of Apartment, 1 Dead and 1 Injured

On 15 June 2024, at approximately 0230 hours local time, two improvised incendiary devices (IID), described as Molotov cocktails, were thrown through the window of a rowhouse apartment on South Green Street in Bridgeport, Chicago, starting a fire. Chicago Fire Department crews responded to the apartment and quickly extinguished the blaze. A 54-year-old woman was killed in the fire and her granddaughter was taken to a local hospital for injuries. According to neighbors, the suspect is believed to be a male who is feuding with the relatives of the victims and was seen fleeing the scene.

Illinois: 2 IEDs Found While Searching Vehicle, 2 Arrested

On 17 May 2024, Pekin Police Department (PPD) officers discovered two IEDs inside a padlocked bag after conducting a traffic stop near Pekin City Hall. The driver was arrested. PPD officers originally discovered illegal contraband inside the vehicle, along with the padlocked bag, which was transported to the police department and opened after a search warrant was obtained. The PPD Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit responded to assist and removed the devices from the scene.

Michigan: Improvised Grenade Discovered Buried in Yard

On 10 May 2024, Van Buren Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of an explosive device at a residence on the 50,000 block of Country Road 388 in Columbia Township. While doing yardwork, the homeowner discovered a hand grenade that had been buried in their yard. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Bomb Squad responded to assist and determined that the grenade was a training grenade that had been modified into a live improvised grenade and had been buried for multiple years. Bomb technicians removed the device from the scene and disposed of it.

Indiana: Suspected Pipe Bomb Discovered on Motorcycle, 1 Arrested

On 14 May 2024, a Michigan man on a motorcycle was followed into Indiana on unrelated warrants by the Michigan State Police Fugitive Apprehension Team and was apprehended at a gas station in Fremont. Police officers found a suspected IED described as a pipe bomb attached to the motorcycle, a stolen handgun, drug paraphernalia, and drugs. Police cordoned off the area, and surrounding businesses were closed. According to authorities, there was no threat to the public as a result of the incident.

Indiana: Grenade Discovered in Man’s Possession at Gas Station, 1 Arrested

On 1 May 2024, at approximately 1800 hours local time, Muncie Police Department (MPD) officers pulled over a rental pickup truck that had been reported stolen. Officers found a needle on the 38-year-old male suspect and took him into custody. Officers searched the vehicle and discovered a grenade inside a backpack. The Delaware County Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was called to the scene, and both the nearby gas station and a liquor store were evacuated as a precaution. Bomb technicians removed the device and cleared the scene.

Michigan: Pipe Bomb Discovered Inside Vehicle, 2 Arrested

On 9 April 2024, at approximately 1730 hours local time, Michigan State Police troopers conducted a traffic stop near Hickory in Prairieville Township and discovered a pipe bomb while searching the vehicle. Michigan State Police Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and removed the device for safe disposal. Two men were arrested on previous outstanding warrants.

Michigan: Explosive Device Found in Fugitive’s Vehicle, 1 Arrested

On 9 April 2024, at approximately 1300 hours local time, Michigan State Police (MSP) officers found a 26-year-old man in Hillsdale with an active arrest warrant from Jackson County. After arresting the man, officers discovered a suspected explosive device in his vehicle. MSP Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and removed the device. No further details were provided, and the investigation is ongoing.

Ohio: Explosive Device Functioned Near Vehicle

On 2 April 2024, at approximately 1545 hours local time, an explosive device functioned next to an unoccupied vehicle parked near Cleveland’s Wade Oval public park. The suspected device damaged the car but did not cause any injuries. The Cleveland Police Bomb Squad responded to the scene, and the University Circle Police Department, Case Western Reserve University Police Department, and Cleveland Police Bomb Squad are continuing to investigate.

Michigan: IED Found at Truck Stop, 1 Arrested

On 28 March 2024, Monroe Public Safety Department authorities arrested a wanted fugitive at a gas station in Monroe. Authorities searched the suspect’s vehicle and discovered a suspicious device. Michigan State Police Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and determined that the device was an IED. The area was evacuated, and technicians removed the device from the scene. The investigation is ongoing and charges against the suspect are pending.

Michigan: Homemade Pyrotechnics Function in Home, 2 Injured

On 24 March 2024, at approximately 2200 hours local time, residents heard an explosion at a Wyandotte residence on Cora Street between Antoine and Baumey Streets. Wyandotte police officers and fire crews responded to assist, and investigators determined that the explosion was caused by a resident manufacturing homemade pyrotechnics. The home sustained severe interior damage and two people were seriously injured. The ATF is assisting in the ongoing investigation.
