Indiana: IID Thrown into Residence, 1 Arrested

On 25 March 2024, at approximately 0250 hours local time, a 47-year-old man allegedly threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, at the window of a Henderson apartment at the 1100 block of Covert Avenue. The IID became entangled in a curtain and did not completely pass through the window, causing a small fire that the victim extinguished. The Evansville Police Department responded and arrested the suspect on arson charges. According to authorities, the suspect had threatened the apartment resident during a verbal altercation prior to the incident.

Ohio: IID Thrown at Home

On 17 March 2024, at approximately 0650 hours local time, Warren Police Department (WPD) officers and the Warren Fire Department (WFD) responded to a home near Freemont Avenue NE for a report of gasoline thrown on a home. At the scene, authorities discovered a window had been shattered by an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail. The IID did not ignite, and the WFD disposed of it. An investigation is ongoing.

Minnesota: Illegal Pyrotechnic Functioned, 2 Injured

On 17 February 2024, at approximately 1800 hours local time, an explosive device functioned inside a Fridley residence on the 5300 block of Altura Road NE, injuring two individuals. The Fridley Police Department and Minneapolis Bomb Squad responded to the residence and determined there was no further danger to the public. Investigators believe the explosion was caused by an illegal pyrotechnic. The investigation is ongoing.

Indiana: IED Discovered in Vehicle, 1 Arrested

On 14 February 2024, Evansville Police Department (EPD) officers patrolling South Kentucky Avenue pulled over a vehicle after determining that its plates belonged to a different vehicle. The 56-year-old male motorist allegedly consented to a search of the vehicle after claiming he had no documentation showing proof of ownership. In the center console of the vehicle, EPD officers discovered an IED, described as a shotgun shell wrapped in blue and silver tape with a screw sticking out of the primer, and called the EPD Hazardous Devices Unit.

Indiana: Explosive Devices Discovered at Home, 2 Arrested

On 8 February 2024, Connersville Police Department officers discovered two explosive devices at the front and back doors of a home at the intersection of 20th Street and Vermont Avenue after receiving reports of suspicious devices at the residence. The Indiana State Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team responded to assist and disposed of the devices via a controlled detonation. No further device details were provided. Authorities located and arrested two suspects in connection to the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

Ohio: IID Used in Attempted Arson Attack

On 24 January 2024, at approximately 0409 hours local time, the Van Wert 911 Center received a call about a garage fire on the 900 block of Leeson Avenue. Van Wert Police Department officers responded and found evidence that someone used an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, to attempt to set the garage on fire. The IID ignited a recycling bin, but an individual inside the garage was unharmed. Surveillance video captured a suspect fleeing the scene after the attempted arson, but no one has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Wisconsin: Explosive Device Found in Vehicle after Deadly Crash, 1 Killed

On 7 January 2024, Dane County Sheriff’s Office deputies discovered an explosive device in the wreckage of a suspect’s vehicle following a police chase that ended on Horseshoe Road in Iron Ridge. Deputies recovered and removed the device, described as “an older style military grenade, or facsimile” from the trunk of the wrecked vehicle. The 27-year-old male driver crashed into a ditch after fleeing a Dodge County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempting to make a traffic stop. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Michigan: IED Found in Vehicle, 2 Arrested

On 5 January 2024, at approximately 0230 hours local time, Portage Department of Public Safety (PDPS) officers searched a stolen car parked at a gas station on Portage Road. During the search, PDPS officers discovered an IED, a handgun, drugs, and drug paraphernalia. The device, described as having a fuse and wrapped in tape, was removed by the Kalamazoo Bomb Squad. A 27-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man were arrested and charged with multiple felonies.

Michigan: Non-Functional IEDs Found in Trash, 1 Arrested

On 2 January 2024, the Grant Police Department received information from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) regarding the discovery of partially dismantled IEDs in the trash receptacle of a Grant residence. The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad responded to the scene to assist with handling the devices. Authorities also found undisclosed bomb-making materials (BMM) in the home.

Indiana: IIDs Thrown at Neighboring Property, 1 Arrested

TRIPwire, 6 June 2023 On 3 June 2023, Muncie Police Department officers responded to a residence on West 15th Street after a suspect threw improvised incendiary devices (IIDs), described as Molotov cocktails, at a neighbor's chicken coop and doghouse. No injuries were reported. The 20-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with attempted murder, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, criminal mischief, and attempted cruelty to an animal.
