Michigan: Pipe Bomb Discovered at Public Park

TRIPwire, 5 June 2023 On 2 June 2023, at approximately 1106 hours local time, the Grosse Pointe Farms Department of Public Safety found a suspected pipe bomb after a Pier Park employee alerted authorities that they had thrown a suspicious metal object, found near the pedestrian drop-off area, into the lake. The ATF, Detroit Police Department Bomb Squad, and Michigan State Police responded to assist. The device was recovered from the lake and bomb technicians determined it was a pipe bomb measuring approximately 5-6 inches long, before rendering it safe.

Minnesota: 2 IIDs Recovered by Authorities

TRIPwire, 30 May 2023 On 27 May 2023, Winnebago Police Department officers recovered two improvised incendiary devices (IIDs), described as small propane canisters with a wick coming out of the top of them for ignition, which were found in the city after authorities received two phone calls. The Faribault County Sheriff’s Office and the Winnebago Fire Department also assisted in the investigation. No further device details have been released. The investigation is ongoing.

Illinois: Pyrotechnic Thrown Into Food Truck, 1 Injured

On 25 April 2023, at approximately 2029 hours local time, Chicago Police Department (CPD) officers responded to a food truck located in North Lawndale after an unknown suspect threw a lit pyrotechnic into the vehicle, injuring the 34-year-old man inside. The CPD Bomb Squad responded to assist and determined the device was consistent with a pyrotechnic. The investigation is ongoing.

Illinois: IID Thrown at Residence, 2 Injured

On 23 April 2023, at approximately 2330 hours local time, Chicago Police Department officers responded to a residence in Englewood after an improvised incendiary device (IID) was thrown at the rear of the home, causing a fire. Chicago Fire Department crews responded to assist and extinguished the blaze. Two juveniles sustained injuries. No further device details were provided, and the investigation is ongoing.
