California: BMM Found During Large-Scale Arrests of Neo-Nazi Gang

On 2 October 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that 68 suspected members and associates of the neo-Nazi “Peckerwoods Gang,” a white supremacist street gang based in San Fernando Valley, were charged following a large-scale investigation into the organization’s suspected criminal activity. During the investigation, authorities seized unspecified BMM, firearms, and dozens of pounds of drugs. One suspect was reportedly manufacturing explosive devices when arrested. No further details on the BMM were provided. The FBI is leading the ongoing investigation.

California: IED, BMM Discovered in Convicted Felon’s Home, 1 Arrested

On 1 October 2024, the West County Special Enforcement Unit, Fillmore Police Department, and Fillmore Bureau of Investigation discovered an IED, bomb-making material (BMM), and ammunition while executing a search warrant at the home of a convicted felon on East Telegraph Road in Fillmore. Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and rendered the IED safe before removing the materials from the scene.

Russia: VOIED Emplaced on Vehicle Functioned, 3 Injured and 1 Arrested ​

On 15 October 2024, a victim-operated IED (VOIED) emplaced between the windshield and hood of a bar owner’s vehicle in Moscow functioned when it was disturbed, injuring the bar owner, his son, and another individual. Authorities arrested the bar owner’s business partner, a 50-year-old Belarusian citizen, in connection with the incident. Authorities searched the suspect’s apartment and found a “weapons cache” but did not release any details. The investigation is ongoing. ​

Mexico: State Guards Attacked with Explosive Device Dropped From UAS, 1 Killed

On 12 October 2024, two Tamaulipas State Guard officers conducting ground reconnaissance operations in a rural area near Río Bravo were injured when an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) dropped an explosive device that detonated. One of the officers suffered severe injuries and passed away on 16 October. No further device details were released. An investigation is ongoing. ​

Mexico: Explosive Device Thrown at Vehicle Verification Center Following Fire, 2 Injured

On 14 October 2024, at approximately 1000 hours local time, two armed individuals on a motorcycle threw flammable liquid inside a vehicle identification center in Celaya, Guanajuato state, starting a fire. While a National Guard member attempted to put out the small fire, the two suspects threw an explosive device into the building, which functioned and injured the National Guard member, and a woman present at the scene. Guanajuato State Public Security Forces, Army personnel, and additional National Guard personnel responded and secured the area. No further device details were released.

Washington: IED Functioned on Roadway

On 11 October 2024, at approximately 1720 hours local time, the King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) received reports of an explosion near the intersection of South 116th Street and 1st Avenue South in Burien. At the scene, KCSO deputies and Burien Police Department officers discovered remnants of an IED that had functioned on the street. No additional device details were provided. No injuries were reported. The KCSO Bomb Disposal Unit is assisting in the ongoing investigating.

Washington: IED Discovered at Residence, 1 Arrested

On 15 October 2024, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Bellingham Police Department officers executed a search warrant at an alleged drug dealer’s residence on Lakeway Drive in Bellingham and discovered an unspecified IED, a stolen firearm, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and $3,000 in cash. The IED was removed from the residence and taken to a police station for further investigation. A 46-year-old male suspect was arrested.

Washington: 3 IEDs Discovered after Police Chase, 2 Arrested

On 12 October 2024, Washington State Patrol officers discovered an idling vehicle with the driver and passenger sleeping inside, along with drug paraphernalia, on the 3500 block of 108th Avenue in Bellevue. The driver fled the scene, and the vehicle was stopped by officers following a car chase on I-90 West. Both suspects attempted to flee on foot and were apprehended and arrested.  Bomb squads from the Bellevue Police Department, Washington State Patrol, King County, FBI, and ATF responded after officers found two IEDs in the vehicle. No additional device information was provided.

Tennessee: Explosives Found in Recycling Facility

On 10 October 2024, at approximately 1414 hours local time, Knoxville Police Department officers and Knoxville Fire Department crews responded to a recycling facility on the 2700 block of Mynderse Avenue in Knoxville after an employee discovered a steel box outside the plant that was emitting smoke. Knoxville Police Department Bomb Squad technicians used an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) to examine the contents of the box, described as a “5x5 steel box” that they believed contained dynamite. The surrounding area was evacuated while authorities examined the box’s contents.

Oregon: Pipe Bomb Discovered During Traffic Stop, 1 Arrested

On 10 October 2024, Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a traffic stop outside Milton-Freewater and arrested the driver for outstanding felony warrants. While searching the vehicle, deputies discovered a pipe bomb inside the glove compartment. The Oregon State Police Bomb Squad was called to assist. Bomb squad technicians x-rayed the device, confirmed it was filled with an unknown substance, and removed it from the vehicle before rendering the pipe bomb safe without incident.
