Pennsylvania: IID Thrown at Private Residence

On 19 August 2019 at approximately 0130 hours local time, the Philadelphia Police and Fire Departments responded to reports of small fire at a private residence. Officers determined an improvised incendiary device (IID) was thrown into a rear window of the home, which started the fire. The resident of the home was not injured. The Fire Marshal ruled the incident arson, and the investigation is ongoing.

Afghanistan: 14 IEDs Detonate in Jalalabad, Injure 123

On 19 August 2019, 14 IEDs emplaced in the eastern city of Jalalabad detonated following celebrations of Afghanistan’s 100th Independence Day. The IEDs detonated in public squares, in markets, and outside of restaurants. At least 123 civilians sustained injuries from the explosions with no reported deaths. No device details were provided. No group has claimed responsibility, but both the Taliban and ISIS operate in the area.

Kansas: Pyrotechnic Devices Discovered in Vehicle

On 17 August 2019 at approximately 1300 hours local time, officers from the Goddard Police Department arrested two robbery suspects after discovering potential pyrotechnic devices, stolen items, and drug paraphernalia in their vehicle. After responding to reports of a theft at a hardware store, police located the suspects at a local farm and home supplies store and called the Bomb Squad to assist with the large pyrotechnic devices in the suspects’ vehicle.

Israel: IED Detonated at Apartment Building

On 18 August 2019, an IED detonated in an apartment building stairwell in Bnei Brak. No residents were injured, but the building sustained damage. Several top municipal officials, including two senior city department managers, live in the building. Officials are investigating whether the IED was an attempt to threaten the public officials or if it was connected to organized crime.

Arizona: Multiple Pipe Bombs Discovered in Private Residence

On 15 August 2019, the deputies from the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of multiple explosive devices found in a private residence. A man cleaning out his deceased father’s home discovered what appeared to be pipe bombs. After confirming the devices, deputies contacted the Bullhead City Police and Kingman Police Department’s Explosive Ordnance Unit. The bomb squad removed the devices and rendered them safe in a desert area.

Pakistan: IED Kills 5 and Injures 15

On 16 August 2019, an IED emplaced under a wooden stage in a mosque detonated during morning prayers in the city of Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan. The explosion killed 5 civilians and injured at least 15 others. Officials believe the IED contained around 8 to 10 kg (17.5 to 22 lb) of explosive material. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but both the Taliban and Baloch separatists are active in the area.
