On 19 September 2019 at approximately 0730 hours local time, a suspicious item was discovered by a local shop owner behind a bank in Mullumbimy. The New South Wales Police and its bomb disposal unit examined the item and confirmed it was an IED. The shop owner described the device as a metal pipe, capped on either end with “circuit-board-looking stuff and a switch.” The device was rendered safe without incident, and the investigation is ongoing.

On 16 September 2019, gunmen attacked an armored truck traveling to Mandeni, Kwazulu-Natal with an explosive device. The armored truck was stopped on the highway by armed men attempting to rob the vehicle after a cash pick-up. The gunmen placed the explosive device on the roof of the truck, but the security personnel escaped before the device detonated. No injuries were reported, and the assailants escaped with an undisclosed amount of money. The investigation is ongoing.
