Turkey: Roadside IED Causes 17 Casualties

On 12 September 2019 at approximately 1800 hours local time, an IED emplaced along a road detonated as a vehicle carrying civilians passed by in the southeast region of Diyarbakir. The explosion killed 7 people and wounded 10 others. No device details were provided, and no group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Greece: IID Damages Political Office

On 12 September 2019 at approximately 0345 hours local time, an improvised incendiary device (IID) detonated in front of a branch office of the New Democracy party in northeastern Athens. The explosion damaged the property and started a fire. Residents of the building where the office is located extinguished the fire before local police and the fire department arrived. Authorities described the device as consisting of three gas canisters. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Iowa: Potential IED Discovered in Mobile Home Park

On 10 September 2019 at approximately 1720 hours local time, the Marion Police and Fire Departments, Linn County Bomb Squad, and Linn County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a suspicious item in a yard at a mobile home park. The device appeared to be a canister partially wrapped in duct tape with two rechargeable batteries, wires, a washing machine timer, and a red LED light. The Linn County Bomb Squad used a robot to render safe the device and removed it from the scene.

Ohio: IED and Weapons Discovered in Vehicle at VA Medical Center

On 9 September 2019 at approximately 2045 hours local time, a suspicious vehicle containing several weapons and an IED described as a pipe bomb was discovered in the parking lot of the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. Officers from the Cleveland Police Department (CPD), a K-9 unit, and the CPD Bomb Squad responded to the scene. Police confiscated the weapons, and the CPD Bomb Squad rendered safe the device.

Cyprus: IED Explosion Damages Vehicle

On 10 September 2019, local police responded to reports of an explosion in the town of Germasogeia in southern Cyprus. At the scene, police found a vehicle with extensive damage from the explosion. A preliminary investigation indicated that a powerful IED caused the explosion. It is unclear if the IED detonated inside the vehicle or next to it. No device details have been released, and the investigation is ongoing.

New Zealand: IED, Weapon, and Meth Discovered in Residence

On 10 September 2019, local police conducted a search of a private residence in the town of Blenheim. Officers discovered an IED, a firearm, and methamphetamine in the residence. A New Zealand Defense Force EOD team responded to the scene and rendered safe the device. A 22-year-old male suspect was arrested and faces a number of charges.
