Belgium: Cars Damaged by Explosive Devices

On 8 March 2019 at approximately 0320 hours local time, two unoccupied cars were damaged by explosive devices believed to be grenades. The Antwerp Police Department, Belgium Federal Police, Forensic Laboratory, and Explosive Devices Disposal and Destruction Unit responded to the scene. Two other cars were attacked in the same neighborhood in the early hours of 6 March 2019. The attacks are reportedly linked to drug trafficking.

Massachusetts: IIDs Found at Site of Car Fire

On 7 March 2019 at approximately 0300 hours local time, Springfield Police Department officers and Springfield Fire Department firefighters responded to a vehicle fire and located two Molotov-type improvised incendiary devices (IIDs) at the scene. K9 units from the Massachusetts State Police were also called in to assist. The Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad is conducting further investigation.

United Kingdom: IED Detonated at Residence

On 7 March 2019 at approximately 0050 hours local time, an IED detonated at a private residence in Craigvon. No one was injured in the attack, but the front door and hallway of the residence were damaged. Police Service of Northern Ireland responded and described the device as a “pipe bomb type device.” The investigation into the emplacement of the device is ongoing.

United Kingdom: IED Concealed in Package Linked to London IEDs

On the morning of 6 March 2019, Police Scotland responded to an IED concealed in a package discovered in the University of Glasgow’s mailroom. Royal Logistics Corps Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians rendered safe the IED. According to the police Scotland press release, the IED was linked to the London VOIEDs and that Police Scotland Counter Terrorist Unit would be coordinating with Metropolitan Police on the ongoing investigation into the source of the packages.

Florida: Suspect Attacked Personal Vehicle with IIDs

On 4 March 2019, a male suspect attacked his vehicle with multiple improvised incendiary devices (IIDs) at an impound lot, setting it on fire. According to the police report, the suspect paid to retrieve his car from the lot and then threw between three and five IIDs over the fence into his car. No one was injured, but the car was burned. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office and Florida State Fire Marshal both responded to the scene. The suspect was arrested.
