According to MPD officers, a suspect placed the device on the ground, lit it on fire and fled the scene. The fire was extinguished, and no damage or injuries were reported. Springfield Fire Department’s bomb squad responded to assist and safely removed the device from the scene. No further device details were provided. The 20-year-old male suspect was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, trafficking in stolen identities, and unlawful possession of an illegal weapon.

According to media reporting, the IED was triggered remotely, causing a blast equivalent to three kilograms (~6 lb 10 oz) of TNT, leaving a crater 30-40 centimeters (~12-16 in) deep with a diameter of nearly three meters (~10 ft). The search warrant was in connection to a 29 March 2023 pipe bomb attack on a bank ATM in North Decatur. On 23 April at approximately 0350 hours local time, a suspect in a camouflage mask was captured on surveillance camera footage throwing two IIDs, described as Molotov cocktails, onto the roof of a business on Frayser-Raleigh Road causing damage to the business. On 26 April, at approximately 2145 hours, surveillance camera footage captured a suspect exiting the front passenger seat of a car in the parking lot of a restaurant on American Way and throwing three IIDs, described as Molotov cocktails, onto the roof of the business. No further details about the IIDs in either incident have been released. The investigations are ongoing.

A second pipe bomb, described as a plastic PVC pipe that contained black powder with black tape holding the end caps, functioned on 27 April at approximately 0650 hours on Sugar Hill Road. A 54-year-old male suspect was arrested, and authorities found a third pipe bomb following a search of his residence and vehicle. Bomb squad technicians rendered the device safe. The suspect was charged with throwing/placing explosives, possession of an infernal machine, and reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, among other charges.
