    TRIPwire, 10 May 2023 On 8 May 2023, at approximately 2000 hours local time, Los Antiguos Police Department officers searched a residence on Picadero Street and discovered explosives described as two 35-centimeter [~14 inches] cylinders separated by a wick-type cord. The 29-year-old male suspect stated that he discovered the devices at a primary school the week before and took them home. The explosives were removed from the residence and rendered safe. No further details on the explosives were released. On 9 May, explosives division personnel searched the school and did not locate any other explosives or materials. The suspect was arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.

    TRIPwire, 9 May 2023 On 7 May 2023, at approximately 1500 hours local time, Hickory Police Department officers discovered two pipe bombs at a church on Highway 127 after responding to a call concerning a suspicious device. The FBI, Gaston County Police Department (GCPD) Bomb Squad, and the Gastonia Police Department (GPD) Bomb Squad responded to assist, used a robot to examine a car parked in front of the church, and found one of the devices in the trunk. The second device was discovered inside the church. Bomb technicians took possession of both devices and rendered them safe. According to media reporting, the devices were constructed with a fuse, sugar, baking soda, stump remover, and sodium nitrate. On 8 May, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, Morganton Department of Public Safety, GCPD Bomb Squad, GPD Bomb Squad, ATF, and FBI executed a search warrant of the suspect’s home in Burke County. The 37-year-old male suspect was arrested and charged with possession of weapons of mass destruction. Possible additional charges are pending.

The pipe bombs were described as “two cylinder objects with fuses that authorities determined to be consistent with explosive devices, specifically pipe bombs.” The SBC’s Arson Bomb Detail rendered the devices safe.
