Maine: Cannonball Rendered Safe

On 26 August 2024, a Yarmouth resident turned in ammunition and ordnance, described as a live cannonball, to the Yarmouth Police Department. Portland Police Department’s Hazardous Devices Unit and the Maine State Police Bomb Squad were called to assist, and bomb squad technicians rendered the cannonball safe.

Washington: Grocery Store Destroyed by IID

On 24 August 2024, at approximately 0300 hours local time, multiple fire departments responded to a fire at a grocery store on the 5300 block of 4th street in Renton. Investigators determined that the fire was caused by an unspecified improvised incendiary device (IID) that functioned at the rear of the store. The blaze caused significant damage to the structure of the building and its contents. The investigation is ongoing.

Ohio: Explosive Device Functioned in Parked Car

On 27 August 2024, at approximately 1323 hours local time, Columbus Division of Fire crews and bomb squad technicians responded to reports of an explosion and subsequent fire in a car parked in an alley near a residence on the 2300 block of South 6th Street in Columbus. Officials determined that an explosive device functioned in the vehicle, which was unoccupied at the time. Three individuals were initially detained for questioning and released with no charges filed. The ATF and FBI are assisting with the ongoing investigation.

North Carolina: Pyrotechnic Functioned Inside Mailbox, Second Pyrotechnic Discovered in Adjacent Mailbox

On 28 August 2024, at approximately 1033 hours local time, Rowan County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) received a report of an explosion inside a mailbox at a residence on the 1800 block of N.C. Highway 152 West near China Grove. RCSO deputies and Cabarrus County Bomb Squad technicians responded to the scene, where they determined the initial explosion was caused by a pyrotechnic device. A secondary search uncovered a second device, described as a commercial pyrotechnic mortar inside an adjacent mailbox.

Mexico: UAS Used to Drop Explosive Devices on Police Station

Switzerland: VOIED Suspected in Explosion Outside Apartment Building, 1 Injured

The man picked up the bag to dispose of it, which caused an item inside the bag to explode. The victim suffered injuries to his leg and was transported to the hospital. Authorities responded to the scene, including specialists from the Zurich Forensic Institute, to determine the exact cause of the explosion. Authorities suspect the bag contained a small victim-operated IED (VOIED).
