Arizona: Pyrotechnic Thrown at Home

On 8 July 2024, at approximately 2045 hours local time, an unidentified suspect driving a car by a home on Shea Boulevard and 104th Street in Scottsdale threw a pyrotechnic device, which functioned moments later. No injuries or damages were reported. Scottsdale Police are investigating the incident. No further device details were provided.

Washington: IED Discovered on Street by Passerby

On 20 June 2024, at approximately 0830 hours local time, a passerby discovered an IED on the side of a street in Lacey and reported it to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office. Washington State Patrol’s Bomb Squad responded and rendered the device safe. No further device-related details were provided. The investigation is ongoing.

Oregon: Pyrotechnics Ignite Brush Fire, 2 Juveniles Cited

On 22 June 2024, at approximately 1430 hours local time, the Baker County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) received a report of a fire near Highway 86 and Grey Eagle Mine Road. Baker Rural Fire Rescue, North Powder Rural Fire Protection District, Keating Rural Fire Protection District, and Lookout-Glasgow Rangeland Fire Protection Association responded and extinguished the blaze. BCSO deputies investigated the scene and spoke with two male teenagers, who admitted to throwing a pyrotechnic device, described as a smoke bomb, into dry grass, igniting the fire.

New York: Man Attacked with IID in Park, 1 Arrested

On 19 June 2024, at approximately 1130 hours local time, Waverly Police Department officers responded to East Waverly New York Park after the recreation department reported a domestic incident. An investigation revealed that around 0930 hours, a 33-year-old female suspect threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, at a male victim, which caused minor damage to the surrounding landscape and building before it self-extinguished.

Minnesota: Bucket of IIDs Brought to Hospital, 1 Arrested

On 20 June 2024, at approximately 0930 hours local time, hospital security staff requested assistance from an off-duty Saint Paul Police Department officer to assist with a man who parked a vehicle outside the hospital entrance and was talking with security staff. Security alerted police to the possibility of improvised incendiary devices (IIDs), described as Molotov cocktails, in the vehicle. The officer looked in the vehicle and saw a bucket of containers with an unknown fluid and rags stuffed in the top, alongside a crossbow and an arrow.

Massachusetts: Explosive Device Functions on Street

On 19 June 2024, the Worcester Police Department received reports of a minor explosion in the vicinity of a commercial shopping center and gas station on Madison Street in Worcester. At the scene, authorities found a small fire, several pyrotechnics, and a gas can, as well as the remnants of a similar explosive device on a nearby street. The Worcester Fire Department and Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad were called to assist. The investigation is ongoing.

District of Columbia: Two-Alarm Fire Started by Pyrotechnic Devices, 2 Injured

On 25 June 2024, at approximately 1400 hours local time, DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire at an apartment complex in the 2600 block of Bowen Road, SE. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which had engulfed two buildings, and rescued one resident, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries. One firefighter was reportedly taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion. In total, 76 people were displaced due to the incident.

Connecticut: Pyrotechnic Devices Wired to Control Panel Discovered During House Fire

On 22 June 2024, at approximately 1830 hours local time, Shelton Fire Department firefighters responded to a residence on Bruce Drive for a report of a house fire. Firefighters discovered that the flames, initiating in the garage, had set off pyrotechnic devices that continued to function as the fire spread. The Derby Fire Department, Shelton Police, Shelton Fire Marshal, Connecticut State Police Fire & Explosive Unit, and Connecticut State Police Bomb Squad responded to assist.

California: IID Functioned Under Police Car, 1 Arrested

On 1 June 2024, at approximately 0400 hours local time, an improvised incendiary device (IID) functioned under a UC Berkeley police car that was parked in front of the campus police station. The device was emplaced near the fuel tank, partially burning the police car when it functioned. The suspect believed responsible for the fire allegedly set three other fires—one on 13 June outside a campus building, a second on 16 June at a construction site on campus, and the third on 16 June on a campus hilltop.

California: 8,000 lb of Pyrotechnics and 5 Firearms Seized, 1 Arrested

On 20 June 2024, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office and Sacramento Metro Fire Department confiscated nearly 8,000 lb of illegal pyrotechnics, over $20,000 USD believed to be used in the purchase and sale of the pyrotechnics, and 5 firearms from a residence on Emory Court in South Sacramento. Police acted on an anonymous tip from a local resident, who alerted them to online advertisements for illegal pyrotechnics posted on social media. A 36-year-old man was arrested in connection to the crime.
