Washington: 3 IEDs Discovered after Police Chase, 2 Arrested

On 12 October 2024, Washington State Patrol officers discovered an idling vehicle with the driver and passenger sleeping inside, along with drug paraphernalia, on the 3500 block of 108th Avenue in Bellevue. The driver fled the scene, and the vehicle was stopped by officers following a car chase on I-90 West. Both suspects attempted to flee on foot and were apprehended and arrested.  Bomb squads from the Bellevue Police Department, Washington State Patrol, King County, FBI, and ATF responded after officers found two IEDs in the vehicle. No additional device information was provided.

Tennessee: Explosives Found in Recycling Facility

On 10 October 2024, at approximately 1414 hours local time, Knoxville Police Department officers and Knoxville Fire Department crews responded to a recycling facility on the 2700 block of Mynderse Avenue in Knoxville after an employee discovered a steel box outside the plant that was emitting smoke. Knoxville Police Department Bomb Squad technicians used an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) to examine the contents of the box, described as a “5x5 steel box” that they believed contained dynamite. The surrounding area was evacuated while authorities examined the box’s contents.

Oregon: Pipe Bomb Discovered During Traffic Stop, 1 Arrested

On 10 October 2024, Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a traffic stop outside Milton-Freewater and arrested the driver for outstanding felony warrants. While searching the vehicle, deputies discovered a pipe bomb inside the glove compartment. The Oregon State Police Bomb Squad was called to assist. Bomb squad technicians x-rayed the device, confirmed it was filled with an unknown substance, and removed it from the vehicle before rendering the pipe bomb safe without incident.

Oklahoma: Suspected Pipe Bomb Discovered During Traffic Stop, 2 Arrested

On 14 October 2024, at approximately 1223 hours local time, Oklahoma City Police Department (OCPD) officers conducted a traffic stop near Southwest 21st Street and South Pennsylvania Avenue in Oklahoma City and found a duffel bag in the vehicle that contained a suspected pipe bomb described as a PVC pipe wrapped in brown paper with a green fuse. The OCPD Bomb Squad was called to assist. No additional details have been released. The driver and passenger were arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.

Iowa: IED Used to Damage Vehicle, 1 Arrested

On 15 October 2024, at approximately 0600 hours local time, Des Moines Police Department (DMPD) officers and Des Moines Fire Department crews responded to a residence on the 1200 block of Hartford Avenue in Des Moines for a report of a vehicle on fire. At the scene, authorities did not find an active fire, but instead found evidence that an explosive device had caused damage to the vehicle. DMPD Bomb Squad technicians and arson investigators were called to the scene and discovered debris consistent with an IED and confirmed damage to the vehicle was consistent with an explosion.

Indiana: Possible Explosive Material Discovered in Vehicle, 1 Arrested

On 13 October 2024, at approximately 2330 hours local time, Starke County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) deputies responded to a residence on the 6000 North Block of 1100 East in Grovertown for a report of a man who allegedly entered the home forcefully and began breaking items and waving a firearm. The 30-year-old suspect fled in a vehicle and was stopped and arrested near a truck stop on US-30 by SCSO and Marshall County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

Illinois: IED Discovered During Narcotics Investigation, 2 Arrested

On 11 October 2024, Stark County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) deputies served search warrants at four different locations across Stark County and discovered an IED at one site, in addition to methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and stolen property. The Peoria Police Department Bomb Squad was called to the scene to assist, and bomb technicians disposed of the IED. No further device details were released. A 44-year-old woman was arrested for possession of an explosive device and drug related charges, and a 47-year-old man was arrested on other charges.

Hawaii: Suspected Pipe Bomb Found in Home After Standoff, 1 Arrested

On 9 October 2024, at approximately 1000 hours local time, the Hawaii Police Department (HPD), HPD Special Response Team, an FBI SWAT team and Crisis Negotiation Team, and agents from the U.S. Marshal Service responded to a residence on the 11-3000 block of Nahelenani Street in Volcano for reports of a man illegally occupying a residence. The 58-year-old suspect barricaded himself inside the home and discharged a firearm at authorities on several occasions. On 10 October, the suspect was apprehended and arrested after attempting to escape the residence.

Colorado: Pipe Bomb Discovered Emplaced on Vehicle in Neighborhood

On 12 October 2024, at approximately 1000 hours local time, Colorado Springs Police Department officers responded to a residence on the 6300 block of Timber Bluff Point in Colorado Springs after a woman found a pipe bomb in the bed of her family’s truck. The device was shown in a video as a metal pipe with end caps on both ends and a green fuse protruding from one of the ends. Police called in an EOD team for assistance. EOD technicians safely removed the pipe bomb. No injuries were reported. An investigation is ongoing.

Alabama: 2 IEDs Discovered in Residence, 1 Arrested

On 14 October 2024, Atmore Police Department (APD) officers responded to a home on the 200 block of Pleasant Hill Circle in Atmore and spoke with a 34-year-old man who was upset about personal issues and made several concerning statements. Officers conducted a follow-up investigation on 15 October and learned that the man may have constructed IEDs, had previously served as an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) technician in the military, and reportedly suffered from PTSD.
