Hawaii: Pyrotechnic Devices Functioned in Trash Cans at Shopping Center, 1 Arrested

On 4 September 2024, at approximately 1100 hours local time, Honolulu Police Department officers responded after an 18-year-old male suspect functioned a pyrotechnic device in a trash can near an ATM at a Honolulu shopping center. The suspect functioned a second device in a trash can beside an escalator, during which time he was under video surveillance by shopping center security. A security guard detained the suspect, who was arrested and charged with suspicion of disorderly conduct and prohibited fireworks.

Georgia: Incendiary Device Found in Burning Vehicle

On 12 August 2024, at approximately 0020 hours local time, Nashville Police Department officers and Nashville Fire Department crews responded to reports of a vehicle on fire. Police officers smelled gasoline inside the vehicle, and fire crews extinguished the remains of the blaze. After a K-9 discovered an incendiary device inside the car, Fire marshals from the State Fire Marshal’s Office were called to inspect the vehicle, confirmed gasoline was inside the car, and declared the fire an act of arson. No further information has been released. The investigation is ongoing.

California: Explosive Device Found in Park

On 1 September 2024, at approximately 1230 hours local time, Redding Police Department officers and Shasta County Bomb Squad technicians responded after an explosive device, described as a “possible cylindrical explosive device,” was found at a park in the 500 block of Peppertree Lane. Bomb squad technicians examined the device before rendering it safe. No additional device details were provided. The investigation is ongoing.

New York: Grenade Found During Investigation

On 23 August 2024, at approximately 1330 hours local time, New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers discovered a grenade during an investigation at an apartment complex on the 600 block of Arnow Avenue in the Bronx. The NYPD Bomb Squad was called to assist, and bomb squad technicians removed the device. No further information has been released.

Massachusetts: Pyrotechnic Device Ignites Porta-potty Fire

On 18 August 2024, at approximately 2045 hours local time, a pyrotechnic device was thrown into a porta-potty at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Dracut, starting a fire inside. The blaze severely damaged the mobile bathroom. Dracut Fire Department crews responded and extinguished the blaze. The incident was captured on surveillance video, and the Dracut Police Department and the Fire Department are working to identify the suspect. The investigation is ongoing.

Louisiana: IID Functioned Outside City Hall, 1 Arrested

On 28 August 2024, at approximately 1300 hours local time, a man unsuccessfully attempted to access the mayor’s office at Jeanerette City Hall in Jeanerette. The suspect then functioned a “delayed” improvised incendiary device (IID) outside of the building before fleeing the scene on a bicycle. The blaze from the IID caused minimal damage to the building, and no injuries were reported. The 41-year-old male suspect was arrested and charged with aggravated arson and manufacture and possession of delayed action incendiary devices.

Kansas: Pyrotechnic Device Functioned in Park Bathroom

On 26 August 2024, at approximately 1900 hours local time, Emporia Police Department officers and Emporia Fire Department crews responded to Las Casitas Park in Emporia after a bathroom was damaged due to a pyrotechnic device. The incident remains under investigation.

Hawaii: Explosive Device Discovered During Police Standoff, 1 Arrested

On 24 August 2024, at approximately 2200 hours local time, Honolulu Police Department (HPD) officers responded to a residence on Koolani Drive in Mililani Mauka, after a neighbor reported seeing the suspect carrying an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail. Upon the arrival of HPD officers, the suspect barricaded himself inside his house and refused to exit. Officers checked the outside of the home and discovered an unspecified explosive device that had been ignited and was still smoldering.

California: 4 Hand Grenades Discovered on Sidewalk

On 22 August 2024, at approximately 1030 hours local time, Baldwin Park Police Department officers and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad technicians responded to Los Angeles Street in Baldwin Park after four hand grenades were found on a sidewalk next to a tree. Bomb squad technicians rendered the devices safe before removing them for later disposal. It is unclear who owns the devices and how they appeared on the ground.

California: Explosives Used to Target ATMs, 1 Arrested

On 8 June 2024, at approximately 0324 hours local time, a suspect carrying a 5-gallon container inserted a hose into an ATM before an explosion occurred within the ATM on Governor Drive in San Diego. The suspect unsuccessfully attempted to extract money from the ATM and fled the scene. San Diego Police Department (SDPD) officers responded to the scene, where they discovered two PVC pipes connected to each other with two batteries taped to them, as well as what appeared to be a “balloon” around the ATM.
