On 7 August 2024, at approximately 1150 hours local time, Chicago Police Department Bomb Squad technicians responded to the 4700 block of South Marshfield Avenue for reports of a suspicious object. Technicians examined the object, determined it was a viable explosive described as a grenade, and removed it from the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

California: Pipe Bomb Emplaced in Mailbox

On 3 August 2024, at approximately 1130 hours local time, Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a residence on Burke Hill Road in Ukiah after a resident found a pipe bomb in their mailbox. The Sonoma County Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team responded to assist. Bomb technicians examined the device, described as a galvanized metal pipe filled with smokeless powder with two plastic end caps and a fuse attached, before removing it from the scene and rendering it safe.

California: Explosive Device Used to Ignite Dumpster Fire

On 1 August 2024, at approximately 0100 hours local time, unidentified suspects threw an unspecified explosive device into a dumpster on the 5000 block of Rubio Avenue in Los Angeles. The explosive functioned, igniting a fire. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the flames. Authorities are still investigating the nature of the explosive. Texas: BMM Found in 2 Locations, Suspect Arrested

On 25 July 2024, Lake Worth Police Department (LWPD) officers found two bags containing potentially explosive devices in separate locations in Lake Worth after a suspicious man was initially reported inside a department store. LWPD officers found the first suspicious bag outside of an auction house on Azle Avenue, and a second bag was later found on Boat Club Road. The Fort Worth Fire Department responded to assist. Bomb squad technicians examined the contents of the backpacks, which were described as propane tanks, electrical wiring, and pressure cookers, before rendering them safe.

Ohio: Explosive Device Thrown at Home

On 26 July 2024, at approximately 2200 hours local time, a 42-year-old male suspect forcefully entered a home on the 400 block of West Fourth Street in Elmira and threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, at the living room wall. The IID functioned and lit part of the wall and floor on fire before the suspect fled the scene. The resident and neighbors were able to extinguish the blaze before calling the Elmira Police Department (EPD) and Elmira Fire Department, who both responded to the scene, along with New York State Fire Investigators.

On 24 July 2024, Kuna Police Department officers responded to a residence near East 4th Street and Orchard Avenue in Kuna, where they discovered explosive devices and suspicious chemicals in the home's garage. The Boise Police Department Bomb Squad, FBI, and Idaho National Guard 101st Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team were called in to assess, process, and remove the devices and chemicals. Georgia: Man Brings IID to Former Employer

On 22 July 2024, Commerce Police Department officers discovered an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, masks, bats, guns with homemade silencers, knives, and camouflage clothing in a vehicle belonging to a 36-year-old suspect at his former employer in Commerce after he returned for a second time to demand his job back. The suspect had originally entered the car dealership on 20 July to demand his job back, brandishing a gun and threatening an employee, but left the dealership before authorities arrived.

On 29 July 2024, Colorado River Sheriff’s Station deputies, with the assistance of the Riverside County Probation Department, conducted a probation compliance check at a residence on the 17000 block of Blythe Way in the unincorporated area of Blythe. At the residence, authorities discovered two unspecified explosive devices, causing other homes in the vicinity to be evacuated. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Hazardous Device Team responded to assist, rendered the devices safe, and removed them for later disposal.
