California: TATP Found While Searching Drug Lab, 1 Arrested

On 26 March 2024, the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office and a team from the county’s hazardous materials program found an explosive compound in three containers while processing the scene at a dimethyltryptamine (DMT) lab at a residence on the 800 block of Shasta Daisy Drive in Brentwood. The Walnut Creek Police Department Bomb Squad responded to assist and identified the substance as triacetone triperoxide (TATP).

Russia: ISIS K Throws Incendiary Devices in Mass Shooting at Concert Hall, 4 Arrested, 80 Injured, 143 Dead

On 22 March 2024, several armed suspects stormed Crocus City Hall, a large music venue in Moscow, and threw incendiary devices at concertgoers and opened fire, subsequently triggering a massive fire within the venue. At least 143 individuals were killed and over 80 were injured. The Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS K) claimed responsibility for the attack. Russian authorities have not confirmed the authenticity of this claim. The incident is the deadliest attack in Russia since the 2004 Beslan school siege. Four suspects were arrested for terrorism charges, and the investigation is ongoing.

Canada: IEDs and EPCs Found in Home, 1 Arrested

On 27 March 2024, at approximately 1337 hours local time, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Explosive Disposal Unit technicians conducted a controlled detonation after discovering unspecified IEDs and explosive precursor chemicals (EPCs) at a residence in Port Alberni, British Columbia, on Vancouver Island. The search followed the discovery of guns and ammunition at the residence on 25 March. A 48-year-old male suspect was arrested and charged with possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, with more charges expected.

Michigan: Homemade Pyrotechnics Function in Home, 2 Injured

On 24 March 2024, at approximately 2200 hours local time, residents heard an explosion at a Wyandotte residence on Cora Street between Antoine and Baumey Streets. Wyandotte police officers and fire crews responded to assist, and investigators determined that the explosion was caused by a resident manufacturing homemade pyrotechnics. The home sustained severe interior damage and two people were seriously injured. The ATF is assisting in the ongoing investigation.

Indiana: IID Thrown into Residence, 1 Arrested

On 25 March 2024, at approximately 0250 hours local time, a 47-year-old man allegedly threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, at the window of a Henderson apartment at the 1100 block of Covert Avenue. The IID became entangled in a curtain and did not completely pass through the window, causing a small fire that the victim extinguished. The Evansville Police Department responded and arrested the suspect on arson charges. According to authorities, the suspect had threatened the apartment resident during a verbal altercation prior to the incident.

Florida: IIDs Thrown Into Barbershop, 1 Arrested

On 22 March 2024, at approximately 0340 hours local time, two individuals smashed the front window of a Miami barbershop in the area around West 1st Avenue and 49th Street and threw in two improvised incendiary devices (IIDs), described as Molotov cocktails, before fleeing the scene. The building sustained severe structural damage. Hialeah Police Department officers and Hialeah Fire Rescue responded, and fire crews extinguished the blaze.

Belgium: IIDs Thrown During EU Policy Protests, 1 Arrested, 2 Injured

On 26 March 2024, protestors in Brussels threw improvised incendiary devices (IIDs), described as Molotov cocktails, and eggs at local authorities. Two officers were injured by the IIDs, and authorities responded by firing tear gas and water cannons at the assailants, resulting in one arrest. This is the third time in two months that protestors have engaged with riot police in Brussels against changes to the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Similar protests have occurred across EU member nations, including Belgium, Poland, Spain, Italy, and France, over the past few months.

Arizona: Cache Containing Non-Functional Pipe Bomb, BMM Discovered on Hiking Trail

On 22 March 2024, a man hiking with his children near the town of Hillside discovered an ammo can containing a non-functional IED described as a pipe bomb and additional bomb-making materials (BMM) hidden in a cluster of boulders. Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene and verified the contents of the ammo can, which included a two-inch galvanized pipe bomb with external horseshoe nails added for additional shrapnel and detonating cord.

West Virginia: Incendiary Devices Discovered in Home, 1 Arrested

On 14 March 2024, Bridgeport Police Department (BPD) officers responded to a home in Bridgeport for a reported domestic disturbance involving a man threatening another individual with a machete. At the scene, officers arrested a 57-year-old man for domestic assault. BPD officers searched the suspect’s home after he reported that he possessed firearms he was forbidden from possessing due to a prior conviction of domestic assault. The officers discovered five incendiary devices, six firearms, over 500 rounds of ammunition, and marijuana in the home.

Washington: Local Retailer Faces Series of Explosive Device Attacks

On 15 March 2024, Tacoma Police Department officers responded to a report of a suspicious device inside a duffel bag outside a retailer. Officers reported that the device appeared to be an IED. A bomb technician from the Tacoma Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal team rendered the device safe and removed it from the location. Surveillance footage revealed that the suspect who placed the device outside the retailer also put fire starter on the side of the building and threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), reported as a Molotov cocktail, at the building.
