Michigan: Pyrotechnic Functioned on Porch

On 10 August 2024, at approximately 0100 hours local time, video footage captured two male teenagers functioning a pyrotechnic on the front porch of a residence on the 4800 block of West Village Trail in Ada. The suspects, who appeared to be filming themselves, knocked on the door of the home before functioning the pyrotechnic and fleeing the scene. The explosion damaged the home and left behind a “powder-like substance.” No further details have been released. Kent County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating.

Hawaii: IED Functioned on Roadside, 1 Injured, 1 Arrested

On the evening of 8 August 2024, an IED that had been emplaced in a trash can on the side of Old Haleakala Highway in Makawao, Maui, functioned, striking a passing vehicle and damaging it, as well as injuring the driver. According to the FBI and Maui Police Department (MPD), the incident is connected to the recent discovery of multiple similar IEDs emplaced in trash cans along roadways between Kahului and Kula.

Georgia: Construction Equipment Set Ablaze with IIDs

On 14 August 2024, at approximately 0200 hours local time, Atlanta Police Department officers and Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department crews responded to a construction site on the 2000 block of Memorial Drive for reports of a fire. Local authorities, Georgia Bureau of Investigation detectives, ATF agents, DHS representatives, and FBI investigators examined the scene and determined that two suspects used three improvised incendiary devices (IIDs) to set fire to two pieces of construction equipment.

Florida: IID Thrown at Restaurant

On 13 August 2024, surveillance video captured a man throwing an improvised incendiary device (IID) at a restaurant on the 1400 block of N. Surf Road in Hollywood. Hollywood Police Department officers responded to the scene at approximately 0500 hours local time, where they discovered burn marks from the IID, described as a Molotov cocktail, but no further damage. The business appears to have been targeted by the same suspect in a June 2024 IID attack. No further details have been released. The investigation is ongoing.

Washington: IID Ignited in Vehicle Outside Home

On 6 August 2024, at approximately 0436 hours local time, an unidentified suspect emplaced an improvised incendiary device (IID) in a vehicle parked outside a Sumner home, which ignited as the suspect fled the scene. The vehicle sustained major damage to both the interior and exterior. The owner witnessed the vehicle engulfed in smoke before it exploded and attempted to extinguish the fire as Sumner Police Department officers and East Pierce Fire & Rescue crews arrived to prevent damage to the home. The resident believes that the attack was targeted toward his children.

Texas: IED Discovered in Vacant Residence

On 1 August 2024, at approximately 1000 hours local time, Donna Police Department (DPD) officers, Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office deputies, and Texas Department of Public Safety personnel responded to a trailer park on the 4200 block of North Farm-to-Market Road 493 for a report of a suspicious device discovered by the landlord. The landlord had been cleaning the mobile home after a tenant was evicted and found two packages wrapped in duct tape and covered in gun shells with wires sticking out of them.

Texas: Man Arrested After Emplacing Pyrotechnics in Bathrooms, 3 Injured

On 20 July 2024, a man entered a unisex bathroom at a car wash on Bandera Road in Helotes and emplaced pyrotechnics beneath a toilet seat, which functioned when a woman sat on the seat. On 26 July, two additional victims reported similar scenarios at a car wash in San Antonio, near Highway 281. All three victims sustained minor injuries. The San Antonio Police Department responded, and officers discovered the remains of small commercial pyrotechnics designed to function when pressure is applied.

Pennsylvania: Pyrotechnics Found During Bethlehem Parade

On 3 August 2024, at approximately 2130 hours local time, Bethlehem Police Department officers responded to a music festival on First Street in Bethlehem after a pyrotechnic was discovered. Officers removed the pyrotechnic, described as a commercial grade firework.

Oregon: Two Explosive Devices Functioned in Neighborhood, Suspect Arrested

On 5 August 2024, at approximately 0930 hours local time, Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers responded to the 1900 block of NE 141st Avenue for reports of a loud explosion and determined an explosive device had functioned in a vehicle but the driver had been able to drive away. The driver and the vehicle returned several hours later, at approximately 1230 hours, and a second explosive device was functioned, leading PPB officers to return to the scene. The Metro Explosive Disposal Unit, FBI, and ATF responded to assist and cleared the vehicle and a suspicious bag.

New Jersey: Suspect Throws IIDs Igniting Home, 1 Arrested

On 7 August 2024, at approximately 1030 hours local time, a Bloomfield Police Department (BPD) officer responded to a house fire and extinguished it single-handedly. Upon further investigation of the scene, the responding officer discovered an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, in the driveway. During the investigation, a female suspect, possibly under the influence of drugs, returned to the home with another IID and was arrested. BPD believes that a similar IID was used to ignite the house fire. The investigation is ongoing.
