Michigan: Pipe Bomb Discovered Inside Vehicle, 2 Arrested

On 9 April 2024, at approximately 1730 hours local time, Michigan State Police troopers conducted a traffic stop near Hickory in Prairieville Township and discovered a pipe bomb while searching the vehicle. Michigan State Police Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and removed the device for safe disposal. Two men were arrested on previous outstanding warrants.

Michigan: Explosive Device Found in Fugitive’s Vehicle, 1 Arrested

On 9 April 2024, at approximately 1300 hours local time, Michigan State Police (MSP) officers found a 26-year-old man in Hillsdale with an active arrest warrant from Jackson County. After arresting the man, officers discovered a suspected explosive device in his vehicle. MSP Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and removed the device. No further details were provided, and the investigation is ongoing.

Massachusetts: Explosive Device Functioned at Satanic Temple

On 8 April 2024, at approximately 0414 hours local time, an unidentified suspect threw an unspecified explosive device onto the front porch of the Satanic Temple in Salem. The device functioned and caused minor damage to the porch and side of the building. No one was inside the building at the time of the event, and the incident was not discovered by staff until later that afternoon. The Salem Police Department responded to the scene and the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad was called in to assist. They swept the building with a K9 unit and found no other hazardous material.

Kansas: Garage Explosion Linked to Pyrotechnics Manufacturing

On 4 April 2024, at approximately 1150 hours local time, Wichita Police Department (WPD) officers and Fire Department crews responded to a fire in a garage at an apartment complex on East Harry Street. Fire crews extinguished the blaze, which authorities determined started after an experimenter mixed an “unknown substance” believed to be connected to manufacturing pyrotechnics, leading to an explosion. One person was killed in the blast. The WPD Explosive Ordnance Unit responded to assist. The ATF and FBI are assisting in the ongoing investigation.

Iowa: IID Ignites Fire in Barber Shop

On 10 April 2024, at approximately 0230 hours local time, the Cedar Rapids Fire Department responded to a fire at a barber shop in Cedar Rapids. Cedar Rapids Police Department officers assisted in the investigation and confirmed that the fire was caused by functioning improvised incendiary devices (IID) described as Molotov cocktails. The front windows of the building were broken, and the building sustained minor fire and smoke damage. The investigation is ongoing.

Idaho: Alleged Plan to Attack Local Churches Foiled, 1 Arrested

On 6 April 2024, an 18-year-old man was arrested in Coeur d’Alene for attempting to provide material support and resources to ISIS after pledging his allegiance to the organization. The suspect had intended to commit a suicide attack against individuals at churches using knives, guns, and explosives on 7 April. A subsequent search of his residence found materials consistent with the planned attack and an ISIS flag in his bedroom.

Georgia: Prison Inmate Indicted for Sending IEDs in the Mail

On 4 April 2024, a 55-year-old man currently serving a life sentence at Phillips State Prison in Buford for kidnapping and other crimes was indicted by the Southern District of Georgia U.S. Attorney’s Office for making an unregistered destructive device, mailing a destructive device, and attempted malicious use of an explosive device.

Florida: Chemical Pressure Bomb, Firearms, Silencer, and Drugs Discovered During Traffic Stop, 1 Arrested

On 5 April 2024, at approximately 1430 hours local time, a Putnam County Sheriff’s Office deputy pulled over a vehicle for an illegal license plate near Moseley Avenue and St. Johns Avenue in Palatka. The deputy searched the vehicle and identified a PVC pipe that was sealed at both ends and set it down before the device functioned. The deputy was not injured as his vest absorbed the bulk of shrapnel, but he inhaled chemicals and was sent to the hospital for treatment. The deputy was evaluated and later released in good condition.

UPDATE Alabama: Man Arrested for Functioning IED Outside of State Attorney General’s Office

On 10 April 2024, a 26-year-old male suspect was arrested on charges of malicious use of an explosive and possession of an unregistered destructive device following a joint FBI, ATF, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and Montgomery Police Department investigation into a 24 February 2024 incident where the suspect functioned an IED outside of the Alabama Attorney General’s office in Montgomery. No injuries were reported, and the remnants of the device were discovered by employees the following morning, prompting a law enforcement response.

Germany: IEDs and BMM Found in Residence

On 4 April 2024, police discovered several IEDs and bomb
making materials (BMM) while searching an apartment in Wolfsburg. In addition to finding the IEDs and BMM---described as several pipe bombs, “a nail bomb,” explosive precursor chemicals (EPCs), and other material---authorities recovered a rocket launcher tube without a munition, a rifle, and drugs in the apartment. A 25-year-old man and a 20-year-old man were arrested and charged with violating the Weapons and Explosives Acts. No further information was released.
