New Mexico: Grenade Found in Hotel Room

On 23 January 2024, the New Mexico State Police and Quay County Sheriff’s Office conducted a welfare check at a hotel in Tucumcari after receiving a tip about possible drug trafficking. Police arrested a 39-year-old man living at the hotel who had an active warrant for his arrest. Inside his room, they discovered a grenade, two firearms, and assorted drugs. The New Mexico State Police Bomb Team was called to the scene to remove the grenade for later disposal. It was unknown at the time of reporting whether the grenade was live.

Florida: Suspected Explosive Device Discovered Along Highway Exit Ramp

On 25 January 2024, at approximately 0840 hours local time, Florida Highway Patrol responded to the shoulder of the Interstate 75 exit ramp leading to State Road 52 in Pasco County for a report of a suspected explosive device that had been discovered by contractors with the Florida Department of Transportation. Tampa Police Department and state bomb technicians were contacted and arrived at the scene to examine the device. The device was removed for further testing. No further device details were released. An investigation is ongoing.

Colorado: Pipe Bomb Found in Vehicle, 1 Arrested

On 30 January 2024, at approximately 1840 hours local time, a Broomfield Police Department (BPD) officer stopped a vehicle in a parking lot at 120th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard and arrested the driver after discovering the suspect had an active warrant out for their arrest. The BPD officer found a suspected IED, described as a pipe bomb, while searching the car. Adams County Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and disposed of the device. No further device details were provided. The investigation is ongoing.

California: Explosive Devices Discovered in Home Following Threats Against High School

On 26 January 2024, San Diego Police Department (SDPD) officers responded to Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego after a juvenile threatened to conduct a shooting at the school. The juvenile was taken into custody, and no explosives were found at the school. On 30 January, SDPD officers responded to the juvenile’s Poway home with a gun violence restraining order and a search warrant and found explosive devices, several unregistered guns, and supplies to make ghost guns.

Arizona: Explosive Device Found on Metro Rail Platform, 1 Arrested

On 23 January 2024, Phoenix Police Department (PPD) officers responded to a metro light rail platform near 24th and Jefferson streets after an explosive device was found under a bench. Officers found the device, described as a bundle of cardboard tubes held together with tape with a green fuse protruding from the bundles. PPD Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist, examined the device, and removed it for further examination. Authorities later confirmed the device contained explosive powders. A 20-year-old male suspect was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct with a weapon.

Mexico: Explosives Workshop and Factory Discovered in La Huacana

Over the weekend of 13 January 2024, Mexican military personnel and police officers discovered a workshop in La Huacana, Michoacán, where they seized 117 explosive devices in various stages of construction including improvised grenades and Molotov cocktails. Along with the explosive devices, bomb making material (BMM) was found including more than 100 kilograms of explosives, explosive charges, fragmentation, bottles for making Molotov cocktails, materials used to make improvised mortar shells, 11 liters [~0.26 gallon] of muriatic acid, and aluminum foil, among other items.

Cyprus: IEDs, Pyrotechnics Found in Residence, 2 Brothers Arrested

On 8 January 2024, members of Limassol’s Anti-Drug Police Unit found three IEDs, four pyrotechnics described as firecrackers, a plastic bottle containing “flammable material,” and a small quantity of drugs while searching a Limassol residence. Police arrested the occupants of the house, 24-year-old and 29-year-old brothers, in connection with the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

Croatia: Hand Grenades, Explosives Found in Residence, 1 Arrested

On 5 January 2024, Zagreb Police Department officers discovered four hand grenades, 200 g of TNT, a blasting cap, two automatic weapons, and hundreds of pieces of ammunition while searching a Dubrava residence. The search followed a 4 January incident in which officers responded to the residence for reports of domestic violence and confiscated an air rifle from the occupant. The 65-year-old male resident was charged with illicit possession, manufacture, and acquisition of weapons and explosive substances.

Australia: IID Emplaced On Car at Home Flying Palestinian Flag

On 5 January 2024, New South Wales Police Rescue & Bomb Disposal Unit officers responded to a south Sydney home after an improvised incendiary device (IID) was emplaced on the car parked at the residence. The home was flying a Palestinian flag, and its residents were described as “pro-Palestinian.” Using a bomb disposal robot, officers inspected the device, described as a jerry can with a small amount of gasoline that had rags stuffed into it, with a disposable lighter, large bolts, and a carboard sign reading “enough take down the flag, one chance!!!!” taped to it.

Washington: C-4 Discovered in Drug Trafficking Investigation, 1 Sentenced

On 23 January 2024, a 35-year-old man from Colbert was sentenced to federal prison for possession with intent to distribute 50 grams of actual methamphetamine. The sentencing stemmed from a DEA investigation into the suspect, who was believed to be in possession of methamphetamine and heroin.
