Nevada: IED, BMM Found at Residence, 1 Arrested

On 6 January 2024, at approximately 2200 hours local time, the Elko Police Department Crime Suppression Unit discovered an IED and bomb-making materials (BMM) while searching a residence on the 600 block of Juneau Street. Elko Bomb Squad technicians responded to the scene several hours later and removed the device. A 34-year-old male suspect was charged with one count each of unlawful possession of an explosive device, possession of an explosive device in a private habitation, and petit larceny.

Missouri: Man Arrested for Tossing IID at Home

During the first week of January 2024, local police arrested a 36-year-old Chaffee man who allegedly made an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, at a local gas station on 21 November 2023 and then tossed it at a home. The victim later called the police and identified the man as a possible suspect. The suspect pleaded not guilty and is expected in court next week for a bond hearing.

Michigan: IED Found in Vehicle, 2 Arrested

On 5 January 2024, at approximately 0230 hours local time, Portage Department of Public Safety (PDPS) officers searched a stolen car parked at a gas station on Portage Road. During the search, PDPS officers discovered an IED, a handgun, drugs, and drug paraphernalia. The device, described as having a fuse and wrapped in tape, was removed by the Kalamazoo Bomb Squad. A 27-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man were arrested and charged with multiple felonies.

Michigan: Non-Functional IEDs Found in Trash, 1 Arrested

On 2 January 2024, the Grant Police Department received information from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) regarding the discovery of partially dismantled IEDs in the trash receptacle of a Grant residence. The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad responded to the scene to assist with handling the devices. Authorities also found undisclosed bomb-making materials (BMM) in the home.

Iowa: IED Found After Shooting in School, 2 Dead, 5 Injured

On 4 January 2024, at approximately 0730 hours local time, a 17-year-old male suspect opened fire at Perry High School, killing one and injuring five others. Perry Police Department officers, Dallas County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Iowa State Patrol officers, and FBI agents responded to the school, secured the scene, and found the suspect deceased with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Upon further investigation, authorities discovered an IED in the school.

Iowa: Multiple IIDs Functioned in Intimidation Attempt, 1 Arrested

On 4 January 2024, at approximately 0615 hours local time, a man functioned an improvised incendiary device (IID) in the backyard of his neighbor’s residence on the 100 block of Alice Street in Sioux City. This was the fourth occasion the 35-year-old man committed the same act of intimidation using IIDs described as Molotov cocktails. On 5 November 2023, at approximately 0400 hours, the suspect functioned an IID on the sidewalk in the front of the neighbor’s residence. On 7 December, at approximately 1145 hours, the suspect functioned an IID on the steps of his neighbor’s residence.

Idaho: Explosive Device Found in Vehicle of Homicide Suspect

On 10 January 2024, at approximately 1000 hours local time, the Nampa Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service Greater Idaho Fugitive Task Force discovered an explosive device and a gun during a traffic stop near the 300 block of North Kings Road. The Nampa Police Department Bomb Unit was called to the scene, where they rendered the device safe. No additional device details have been released. A 37-year-male passenger was arrested and is being held on a fugitive warrant as a possible suspect for a homicide in Missouri.

Idaho: IED Found in Vehicle, 2 Arrested

On 6 January 2024, at approximately 1130 hours local time, a Pocatello Police Department officer stopped a vehicle on East Oak Street after the officer ran the car’s Utah dealership license plate and discovered a discrepancy. Officers searched the vehicle after a narcotic K9 indicated the presence of drugs and discovered methamphetamine and an IED, described as a prescription bottle with a fuse coming out of the top and a black powdery substance on the outside. Officers requested assistance from the Idaho Falls Police Bomb Squad in disposing of the device.

Florida: Pyrotechnic Device, BMM Found in Home, 1 Arrested

On 1 January 2024, Lee County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) deputies responded to a home on Bellezza Way in Fort Myers after receiving a call from the resident that his neighbor had overdosed in his driveway. During a search of the caller’s residence, deputies discovered a pyrotechnic device described as a railroad torpedo and bomb-making material (BMM), including hand grenade bodies, mercury switches, and two brown rectangular pieces of suspected explosives labeled "Dangerous Explosive.” The LCSO Bomb Squad responded to assist and removed the BMM from the scene.

Colorado: Explosive Device Functions, Destroys 4 Mailboxes

On 4 January 2024, at approximately 1745 hours local time, Teller County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a reported mailbox explosion at the intersection of County Road 11 and High Chateau Road in the Florissant area. At the scene, deputies found a bank of four oversized mailboxes destroyed with pieces scattered across the road. A detective with the Colorado Springs Police Metro Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit assisted with the investigation, and evidence from the scene was sent to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation for further analysis. The investigation is ongoing.
