Texas: Man Attempts to Construct IID During Police Standoff

On 21 May 2024, at approximately 1230 hours local time, Austin Police Department (APD) officers saw a stolen vehicle at a gas station on the 8100 block of Salt Springs Drive. The driver of the stolen vehicle barricaded himself inside the store, and police attempted to persuade him to exit the gas station. While inside the gas station, the suspect shot at law enforcement officials and unsuccessfully tried to create an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, by pouring lighter fluid into a container with a rag.

Tennessee: IID Thrown at Home, 1 Arrested

On 20 May 2024, at approximately 1600 hours local time, an individual threw an improvised incendiary device (IID) at a neighbor’s home on Evanback Court in Murfreesboro. The suspect assaulted two other neighbors before barricading himself inside a home. The Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD) Special Operations Unit, MPD Unmanned Aircraft Systems Team, Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) Bomb Squad, THP Robot Team, Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department, and ATF responded to the scene to assist. After barricading himself for several hours, the 38-year-old man exited and was arrested.

Pennsylvania: IEDs and BMM Found in Apartment Building

On 26 April 2024, Pittsburgh Police Department officers and Bomb Squad technicians responded to an apartment on Forbes Avenue after suspicious powders were discovered inside the building among an evicted resident’s belongings. Authorities discovered 32 IEDs, along with bomb-making material (BMM), described as sulfur powder, aluminum powder, potassium nitrate, air float charcoal, and fuses. Technicians removed 32 separate devices from the scene and safely disposed of them.

Oregon: BMM and Guns Found in Home, 2 Arrested

On 16 May 2024, Grants Pass Police Department (GPPD) officers searching a home on Highway 199 discovered bomb-making material (BMM), including over five pounds of red phosphorous, six blasting caps, and detonating cord; 34 firearms; and drugs. A 57-year-old man and 49-year-old woman were arrested and charged with 34 counts of felon in possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

North Carolina: Pyrotechnics Functioned During Street Takeover

On 25 May 2024, a street takeover event was reported on East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Charlotte. During the event, multiple pyrotechnic devices were caught on video being functioned and sent flying into the air. No injuries or arrests have been reported. An investigation is ongoing.

New York: Pyrotechnic Device Functioned Inside Convenience Store

On 29 May 2024, The Elmont Fire Department (EFD) responded to a convenience store on Elmont Road for a report of a fire. Police determined that a man walked into the convenience store, lit a pyrotechnic device, and threw it down an aisle of the store before fleeing the scene. Two additional men were also seen fleeing the scene. The device functioned and caused damage to shelves and merchandise, as well as ignited a small fire that was extinguished by the EFD. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. An investigation is ongoing.

Nevada: Explosive Device Found While Searching Vehicle, BMM and Names of Police Officers Discovered in Residence, 1 Arrested

On 18 May 2024, at approximately 0100 hours local time, Carson City Sheriff’s Office deputies discovered an explosive device and drug paraphernalia during a routine traffic stop. The Tahoe-Douglas Bomb Squad, Nevada National Guard’s 92nd Civil Support Team, and FBI responded to assist. Bomb technicians disposed of the device at the scene. No further device details were provided.

Kentucky: IID Thrown Onto Roof of Donut Shop, 1 Arrested

On 21 May 2024, at approximately 1200 hours local time, Louisville Fire Department crews responded to a donut shop on Bardstown Road after a suspect threw an improvised incendiary device (IID) made from a plastic bottle onto the roof, starting a fire. Fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze. The building received significant fire damage to the roof and attic, but no injuries were reported. The 40-year-old male suspect was arrested and charged with first-degree arson and first-degree wanton endangerment.

Illinois: 2 IEDs Found While Searching Vehicle, 2 Arrested

On 17 May 2024, Pekin Police Department (PPD) officers discovered two IEDs inside a padlocked bag after conducting a traffic stop near Pekin City Hall. The driver was arrested. PPD officers originally discovered illegal contraband inside the vehicle, along with the padlocked bag, which was transported to the police department and opened after a search warrant was obtained. The PPD Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit responded to assist and removed the devices from the scene.

Colorado: Pyrotechnic Devices Cause Brush Fire, 2 Arrested

On 24 May 2024, at approximately 1200 hours local time, Garfield County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Grand Valley Fire Protection District personnel responded to an area near Lodgepole Circle in Battlement Mesa for a report of a brush fire. The fire had engulfed about an acre of land and destroyed several fences, but first responders were able to extinguish the flames before they reached nearby homes. An investigation into the blaze revealed that pyrotechnic devices had been functioned and caused the fire.
