Pakistan: Secondary IED Attack Targets First Responders and Media Covering Initial Blast

On 5 September 2019, two coordinated IEDs detonated in Quetta’s Khezai Chowk area. According to police officials, the first IED functioned at a transport company’s office. The second IED detonated as police, rescue workers, and media representatives responded to the site. One rescue worker was killed while 10 others sustained injuries.

Afghanistan: VBIED Targets High-Security Zone Housing U.S. Embassy

On 5 September 2019 at approximately 1010 hours local time, a vehicle-borne IED (VBIED) detonated in a heavily-fortified area in Kabul, which houses the U.S. Embassy, the Afghan National Directorate of Security, and other diplomatic missions. An estimated 10 people were killed and 42 others were wounded in the attack claimed by the Taliban. Civilians, security personnel, and 2 NATO service members, including a U.S. service member are among the casualties.

Philippines: Explosive Materials Discovered While Executing an Arrest Warrant

On 3 September 2019 at approximately 0530 hours local time, police officers from the Zamboanga Peninsula Regional Office seized bomb-making materials during a law enforcement operation. Police arrested a 36-year-old suspect who had a standing warrant for murder in the remote Panganuran village. Officers identified 1.5 kg (3.3 lb) ammonium nitrate, 2.5 meters (8.2 ft) detonating cord, 14 blasting caps, firearms with ammunition, and drug paraphernalia.

Mali: IED Detonates Under Civilian-Packed Bus

On 3 September 2019, an IED emplaced on a roadway detonated underneath a passenger bus in Mopti killing an estimated 14 people and wounding 24 others. According to media reports, the bus was carrying 60 passengers when it drove over the IED. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack and the device details are unknown. Jihadist militants have previously targeted UN officials, Malians, and international troops in this region. The investigation is ongoing.

United Kingdom: IED Functions Outside Private Residence

On 3 September 2019 at approximately 2250 hours local time, an IED thrown at a house functioned outside a Londonderry residence. The front door of the home was damaged, but no injuries were reported. Police and British Army Ammunition Technical Officers responded to the scene. Police suspect a pipe bomb-like device was used and are investigating whether the incident was a sectarian hate crime.

Netherlands: Secondary Explosive Device Left at Failed ATM Robbery

On 4 September 2019 between approximately 0500 and 0530 hours local time, an ATM in Amsterdam was targeted in an attempted robbery. Local residents reported one explosion, while a second explosive device meant to remove the ATM from the wall failed to function. The Ministry of Defense’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service responded to the scene to investigate.

Alabama: IED Discovered at Gas Station

On 2 September 2019 at approximately 1700 hours local time, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an IED at a gas station in Wilmer. The IED, described as a pipe bomb, was noticed by a customer and reported to employees, who informed local authorities. The Mobile County EOD detail responded to the incident and rendered safe the device without incident. The investigation is ongoing.
