United Kingdom: Improvised Mortar Tube Found in Northern Ireland

On 8 April 2019, Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers responded to the discovery of an improvised mortar tube outside the town of Castlewellan in County Down. PSNI personnel removed the mortar tube and associated command wire from the scene for additional examination, and a PSNI spokesperson told the press that the mortar tube did not contain a projectile at the time of its discovery. No additional details regarding the construction of the mortar tube or any associated projectiles were available.

Egypt: PBIED Attack Kills Seven in the Sinai

On 9 April 2019, a suicide person-borne IED (PBIED) functioned in the town of Sheikh Zuweid in the Sinai, killing 7 and injuring 26 others. The attack occurred during a security sweep of a market and targeted police personnel, four of whom were among the dead. ISIS-Sinai Province claimed responsibility for the attack.

California: IED Functions at Bus Stop

On 8 April 2019 at approximately 0950 hours local time, an IED functioned at a Tenderloin bus stop. According to the San Francisco Police Department, witnesses described the device as a pipe bomb and saw a male suspect ride away from the scene. There is no further information on the device and the investigation is ongoing.

Afghanistan: Suicide VBIED Kills 3 Americans Outside Bagram Air Base

On 8 April 2019, three U.S. service members were killed when a suicide vehicle-borne IED (VBIED) attacked a convoy of trucks transporting U.S. personnel near Bagram Air Base in eastern Afghanistan. Three other service members were wounded. There was no information available regarding the construction of the VBIED. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a subsequent statement released on social media.

New Jersey: Pipe Bomb and Associated Components Found in Drug Raid

On 6 April 2019, police executing a search warrant at a Berlin Borough home discovered a pipe bomb with associated components in addition to nine firearms, crystal methamphetamine, and heroin. The prosecutor’s Suburban Narcotics Task Force, Berlin Borough police, and the Lower Camden County Regional Special Response Team executed the raid as part of an investigation into suspected drug sales. The Camden County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad responded to the scene and removed the device and explosive materials.
