California: Explosive Device Found in Canal Following Reports of Explosion

On 17 May 2024, at approximately 1500 hours local time, Fresno County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) deputies responded to a canal near South Temperance Avenue in Selma after an individual reported seeing an explosion and a suspicious device floating in the canal. The FCSO Explosive Ordnance Disposal team responded to the scene, where they collected the suspicious device stuck against a trash grate in the canal and rendered it safe. No further device details were provided. The investigation is ongoing.

California: Nearly 1,500 Pounds of Pyrotechnics Seized by Police, 1 Arrested

On 22 May 2024, the Oxnard Fire Department and Oxnard Police Department (OPD) received a tip from a Ventura County shipping business they had received pyrotechnics from an out-of-state facility. The Ventura County Bomb Squad was called in to assist with the removal and storage of the illegal pyrotechnics weighing 1,497 pounds. OPD identified and arrested the intended recipient of the pyrotechnics, a 47-year-old male who is facing felony charges of possession of dangerous fireworks.

Arizona: Explosive Material Emplaced Outside of Apartment Building, 1 Arrested

On 27 May 2024, Phoenix Police Department (PPD) officers responded to an apartment complex near 24th Street and Thomas Road following a report stating that a woman left a suspicious package at the front office and made an unspecified threat to an employee. PPD Bomb Squad technicians responded to the scene and determined the package contained an unspecified explosive compound. The female suspect was detained and arrested by the police. No further details have been released.

Peru: Explosive Device Functioned at School in Extortionist Plot

On 13 May 2024, at approximately 2346 hours local time, an unidentified suspect placed and initiated an unspecified explosive device at the door of a private school in the district of El Provenir, Trujillo. The explosive device functioned, causing minor damage to the door and walkway. No injuries were reported. The incident was a part of an ongoing extortionist plot against the school and individuals affiliated with the institution, and this was the fourth time the school had been targeted.

United Kingdom: BMM Discovered in Home, 2 Arrested

On 14 May 2024, Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) intelligence led to a raid by officers on a home in the
Holylands residential area of Belfast. At the residence, PSNI officers discovered bomb making material (BMM), described as potassium nitrate and corn syrup, as well as firearms, bladed weapons, crossbows, handcuffs, a bullet press, piping, 25 mobile phones, and 3D printed items. Colombia: Explosive Device Discovered before U.S. Ambassador’s Arrival

On 14 May 2024, a Colombian National Army press release stated that military personnel discovered an explosive device emplaced on a road in San Jose del Guaviare, Department of Guaviare, ahead of a scheduled visit by the U.S. Ambassador. According to the Colombian National Army following an investigation, it was unlikely that the device was related to the visit and was instead intended to be used against Colombian military personnel. Military bomb technicians rendered the device safe. No further device details have been released.

Washington: IED Found on Patient at Hospital

On 8 May 2024, Bellingham Police Department (BPD) officers responded to a hospital on a report of an IED found on a patient. Hospital staff removed the device from the building, where the BPD Hazardous Device Unit could safely remove it from the scene. The suspect reported that he used the device to scare coyotes off his property and accidentally brought it in his jacket. No further device-related details were provided. Authorities recommended charges of reckless endangerment against the suspect, and the investigation is ongoing.

Michigan: Improvised Grenade Discovered Buried in Yard

On 10 May 2024, Van Buren Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of an explosive device at a residence on the 50,000 block of Country Road 388 in Columbia Township. While doing yardwork, the homeowner discovered a hand grenade that had been buried in their yard. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Bomb Squad responded to assist and determined that the grenade was a training grenade that had been modified into a live improvised grenade and had been buried for multiple years. Bomb technicians removed the device from the scene and disposed of it.

Louisiana: BMM and Suspected IEDs Discovered in Home, 1 Arrested

On 10 May 2024, at approximately 0700 hours local time, New Iberia Police Department (NIPD) officers responded to the scene of a vehicle crash on Fontelieu Drive in New Iberia. A search of the crashed vehicle resulted in the discovery of narcotics and firearms and the arrest of the 38-year-old male driver. The discovery led NIPD officers to search a motel and two nearby homes in the 800 block of Fontelieu Drive. At one of the homes, officers discovered bomb-making material (BMM) and a suspected IED.

Indiana: Suspected Pipe Bomb Discovered on Motorcycle, 1 Arrested

On 14 May 2024, a Michigan man on a motorcycle was followed into Indiana on unrelated warrants by the Michigan State Police Fugitive Apprehension Team and was apprehended at a gas station in Fremont. Police officers found a suspected IED described as a pipe bomb attached to the motorcycle, a stolen handgun, drug paraphernalia, and drugs. Police cordoned off the area, and surrounding businesses were closed. According to authorities, there was no threat to the public as a result of the incident.
