Oregon: IID Thrown at Home, 1 Arrested

On 7 November 2024, at approximately 0000 hours local time, Portland Fire and Rescue responded following reports of a fire at a residence on the 2200 block of Southeast Salmon Street in Portland. Authorities found that the suspect allegedly threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a “Molotov cocktail–like device,” on the front porch of the home, starting the fire. Portland Fire Bureau and Arson Investigators determined that the fire was intentionally set with an accelerant. No injuries were reported, but the home sustained moderate damage.

Ohio: Military Ordnance Discovered in Home

On 12 November 2024, at approximately 1500 hours local time, Tiffin Police Department (TPD) officers responded after several pieces of ordnance were discovered in a residence on West Perry Street in Tiffin. The ordnance included hand grenades, mortar rounds, and landmines. TPD officers stated that the ordnance was discovered by a family member who was sorting through the decedent’s belongings. The Toledo Bomb Squad was called in to assist. Several ordnance items were determined to be inert and all items were removed without incident.

New Jersey: Magnet Fishers Pull Military Projectile from River

On 9 November 2024, at approximately 1230 hours local time, Cherry Hill Police Department officers responded to Cooper River in Cherry Hill after ordnance, described as an old military projectile, was pulled from the river by two fishermen who were using a magnet in the water near the Cuthbert Boulevard bridge. The Camden County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad was called to assist, and authorities stated that the ordnance showed signs of having been in the river for a long time. The bomb squad removed the ordnance from the area in order to safely dispose of it.

Missouri: Explosive Material Discovered in Vehicle, Suspect Killed

On 9 November 2024, at approximately 0016 hours local time, Raytown Police Department (RPD) officers and Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers responded to a gas station on the 8700 block of East 63rd Street in Raytown after a 32-year-old male suspect got into an altercation with a security guard and claimed that he had explosives and firearms in his vehicle. The suspect left the scene on foot before police arrived, and officers evacuated the area and called the Kansas City Police Department’s Bomb and Arson Unit to assist.

Minnesota: IEDs Found in Car and Hotel Room, 1 Arrested

On 2 November 2024, Oak Park Heights Police Department conducted a traffic stop along Highway 36 in Stillwater and arrested the 46-year-old driver for various traffic violations. While the suspect’s vehicle was being towed, an inventory of the vehicle’s contents led to the discovery of IEDs. The St. Paul Bomb Squad was called to assist. The IEDs were described as nine small CO2 canisters with fuses attached to them by tape, and a PVC pipe with endcaps screwed in.

Michigan: Pipe Bombs Found in Vehicle, Suspect Killed and 1 Police Officer Injured

On 6 November 2024, at approximately 1709 hours local time, Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office notified Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Jackson Police Department that a 31-year-old male suspect—who they were in pursuit of following an alleged domestic violence incident—was in Jackson County. Officials spotted the suspect’s vehicle on the 1000 block of Cooper Street in Jackson and began a vehicle pursuit. The suspect reportedly fired at officers while fleeing, striking homes and vehicles before injuring a police sergeant.

Maryland: IED Found Inside Home, 1 Arrested

On 13 November 2024, at approximately 0100 hours local time, Maryland State Police (MSP) responded to a residence on the 20300 block of Lower Georges Creek Road in Westernport after a suspect broke into a home. Troopers arrested the suspect and found an IED in the home following a search. MSP notified the State Fire Marshal Bomb Squad, who responded, ran diagnostics on the device, and conducted render-safe procedures. No additional device details have been released.

Florida: Pipe Bomb and BMM Found in Home, 2 Arrested

On 13 November 2024, media reports indicated that Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies arrested two suspects after executing an outstanding warrant at a residence on the 6400 block of Southeast Lockerby Place in Hobe Sound. MCSO deputies discovered a pipe bomb and bomb-making material (BMM) used to construct the pipe bomb, including exploding target material, ball bearings, and PVC pipe in the residence. Deputies also found multiple firearms in the home, some of which had visible drill marks and altered switches.

California: Possible Explosive Device Found Outside City Courthouse

On 13 November 2024, at approximately 0715 hours local time, the Torrance Courthouse in Torrance was evacuated after a suspicious package was found near the main entrance of the building on a bench. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Arson Explosives Detail, Torrance Police Department, and the FBI responded to the scene. Bomb technicians used a robot to inspect the package described as a “large orange bag or balloon next to a cooler.” The robot was used to puncture the device. No additional device details have been released.

Brazil: Multiple Explosive Devices Functioned Outside Supreme Court Building, 1 Killed

On 13 November 2024, Brazilian federal police responded to Brazil’s supreme court building in Three Powers Plaza in Brasilia after a man functioned an IED, killing himself in the process. According to media reporting, the man functioned an explosive device in a vehicle in the parking lot before attempting to enter the Supreme Court building. Security camera footage captured the suspect throwing an object at a statue, retreating when a security guard approached, and then throwing an explosive device at the building, which functioned.
