Massachusetts: TNT, Plastic Explosives Discovered Buried in Forest

On 19 September 2024, at approximately 1430 hours local time, Rowley Police Department (RPD) officers and Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad technicians responded to a state-owned forest in Rowley near the border of Newbury after a man using a metal detector discovered a box containing trinitrotoluene (TNT) and unspecified plastic explosives buried in the ground. The FBI and ATF were called to the scene, and bomb squad technicians disposed of the explosives.

Indiana: 5 IEDs Found in Residence, 1 Arrested

On 22 September 2024, Connersville Police Department (CPD) officers responded to Ohio Avenue in Connersville for reports of a gunshot being fired into an unoccupied vehicle. After interviewing neighbors about the incident, police identified a 49-year-old male suspect and went to his residence, where they located a vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting. CPD officers were granted a search warrant for the residence, where they found five suspected IEDs.

Idaho: Modified Pyrotechnics Found During Traffic Stop, 1 Arrested

On 23 September 2024, at approximately 1630 hours local time, Rexburg Police Department officers discovered an IED in a vehicle during a traffic stop near Second West and Main St in Rexburg. The IED consisted of two modified pyrotechnics described as “commercial mortars” that had been removed from their original packaging and taped together with a long fuse. The Idaho Falls Regional Bomb Squad was called to assist and removed the pyrotechnics without incident. A K-9 unit performed a final search of the vehicle and found no additional hazardous materials.

California: IED Functioned in Courthouse, 6 Injured and 1 Arrested

On 25 September 2024, at approximately 0850 hours local time, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, Santa Maria Police, Santa Maria Fire, California Highway Patrol, Santa Barbara County Fire Department, and bomb squad technicians responded to the Santa Maria Superior Court Complex on Cook Street after a suspect functioned an IED outside the Department 9 room of the courthouse. According to media reporting, the suspect tossed a backpack containing the IED past a security station inside the courthouse, injuring six individuals before fleeing the scene.

Canada: Over 28 Pounds of Explosives, Firearms, Drugs Seized During Searches, 20 Arrested

On 25 September 2024, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced that on 22 August 2024, officers from the North Community Response Unit (NCRU) and Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team (IERT) found over 28 pounds of explosives, firearms, magazines, drugs, radio jammers, and two stolen vehicles while searching a residence on Industrial Road in Surrey, British Columbia. Twelve individuals were arrested in connection with the materials discovered.

California: Explosive Device Functioned in Vehicle

On 19 September 2024, at approximately 0600 hours local time, the Roseville Police Department responded to the intersection of Circuit Dr and Church St for reports of a vandalized vehicle and discovered the remains of an unspecified explosive device, which shattered the vehicle's windows. No injuries were reported. Investigators determined the explosive device was intentionally placed in the vehicle, but no motive was identified. No further device-related details were provided. The investigation is ongoing.

Lebanon: Explosives Concealed in Communication Devices Functioned, At Least 32 Killed and 3,000 Injured

On 17 September 2024, between 1530 and 1630 hours local time, thousands of pagers reportedly belonging to Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon detonated simultaneously, killing at least a dozen people and injuring thousands. According to reports, suspected explosives may have been implanted in the pagers before they were shipped to the group—a U.S. designated "Foreign Terrorist Organization"—in Lebanon. There are also conflicting reports suggesting the pager devices may have been intercepted in transit. Reports suggest the pagers were detonated via a radio-controlled switch activation.

Germany: Explosive Device Functioned Outside of Nightclub, 1 Injured

On 16 September 2024, at approximately 0550 hours local time, an explosion was reported outside of a nightclub in the Hohenzollernring area in Cologne. The explosion left one person with minor injuries and caused material damage to the front of the building. North Rhine-Westphalia state police officers responded to the scene to assist. Investigators obtained surveillance camera footage showing a hooded man emplacing either a bag or sack in front of the club and lighting it on fire. The man fled the scene, and a bright flash of light was recorded when the explosive device functioned.

Colombia: Military Base Attacked with Improvised Rockets, 2 Killed, 27 Injured

On 17 September 2024, armed assailants fired improvised rockets from a cargo truck toward a military base in Puerto Jordán, Department of Arauca. The attack left 2 soldiers dead and at least 27 wounded. The military blamed the National Liberation Army (ELN) for the attack; the ELN previously ended a ceasefire with the government in August 2024. In the aftermath of the incident, the government stated on 18 September that it would suspend ongoing peace talks with the ELN. No further device details were released.

Vermont: Mailbox Destroyed by Explosive Device

On 12 September 2024, at approximately 0830 hours local time, Vermont State Police (VSP) received a report of vandalism at a residence on Georgia Shore Road in the town of Georgia. Neighbors told VSP troopers that they heard an explosion on 10 September at approximately 2030 hours. According to VSP, an unspecified explosive device functioned and destroyed a mailbox. No further device details were provided. The investigation is ongoing.
