Pennsylvania: Pipe Bomb Discovered Behind Church

On 19 February 2023, at approximately 1340 hours local time, Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) officers responded to St. Dominic Catholic Church on Frankford Avenue after a pipe bomb was discovered behind the church in the cemetery. The PPD Bomb Squad responded to assist, examined the pipe bomb, described as a capped 18-inch PVC pipe containing an unknown powder with black powder residue on the device, and safely removed it from the scene for further analysis. No injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.

Missouri: IED Discovered in Vehicle

On 19 February 2023, at approximately 0709 hours local time, Howell County Sheriff’s Office deputies discovered an IED inside a vehicle after responding to a call about a vehicle stopped in the middle of County Road 5130 with a man slumped over the steering wheel. Missouri State Highway Patrol Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist, removed the IED, and conducted render safe procedures offsite. No further device details have been released. The driver was arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.

California: Explosive Device Functioned Near Residence, 1 Arrested

On 14 February 2023, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a 51-year-old male suspect in Arizona in connection to a 28 January 2023 incident where the suspect reportedly functioned an explosive device near the Thousand Oaks, California residence of his ex-girlfriend before returning to Arizona. No further device details were released, and no injuries were reported.
The suspect was charged with stalking and using an explosive device.

Michigan: Exploding Target Material Functioned at Creek

On 16 February 2023, media reporting indicated that Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) conservation officers responded to a beaver dam along Crooked Creek after a suspect detonated a large block of exploding target material removing the dam, which prompted flooding to nearby residents. A property owner admitted to MDNR conservation officers that they detonated the exploding target material and officers were able to locate .308 rifle casings at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

Canada: IIDs Thrown at Business

On 16 February 2023, at approximately 0130 hours local time, Montreal police (SPVM) responded to a freight transportation business in Saint Laurent after an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, was thrown through a window, starting a fire. No further device details have been released. Local firefighters extinguished the blaze and investigators found remnants of the IID inside. No injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.
