Mexico: IIDs Thrown at Businesses and Vehicles

On 30 January 2023, unidentified armed suspects threw improvised incendiary devices (IIDs), described as Molotov cocktails, at four businesses and eight vehicles throughout the municipalities of Celaya, Juventino Rosas, and Comonfort after authorities allegedly captured a known criminal leader. Ecuador: Explosives Used to Attack Residence, 2 Arrested

On 1 February 2023, at approximately 0315 hours local time, local police responded to a residence in the Juan Montalvo sector after two suspects functioned explosives, described as blocks of dynamite, in front of the home. No further device details have been released, and no injuries were reported. The facade of the home sustained damage in addition to a vehicle parked nearby. Two suspects were arrested in connection to the attack, and the investigation is ongoing.

Pennsylvania: IED Discovered at Gas Transmission Facility

On 26 January 2023, Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) troopers responded to a gas transmission facility in Fallowfield Township after an IED was found wedged into the door of an industrial gas pipe. Germany: Explosives Used in ATM Attack, 2 Arrested

On 31 January 2023, at approximately 0200 hours local time, at least two suspects used explosives to attack an ATM at a supermarket in Koblenz before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. The ATM and supermarket sustained extensive damage. No further details about the explosives have been released, and no injuries were reported. According to authorities at approximately 0500 hours, two suspects, a 19-year-old and a 21-year-old, were arrested following a pursuit with the help of a police helicopter.

On 29 January 2023, at approximately 0319 hours local time, Bloomfield Police Department officers responded to Temple Ner Tamid in Bloomfield after a male suspect threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, at the synagogue’s front door. No further device details were provided, but surveillance footage shows a suspect wearing a ski mask light a glass bottle and throw it at the synagogue. No injuries or damages were reported. UPDATE Spain: BMM Found in Suspect’s Residence

On 27 January 2023, the Spanish Ministry of the Interior reported that police discovered bomb-making material (BMM), described as welding tools, metal elements, and screws in the Miranda de Ebro residence of a 74-year-old male suspect who was arrested on 25 January in connection to sending six IEDs concealed in letters to various government officials, embassies, and a weapons company throughout Spain. The suspect was charged with the manufacture and use of explosive devices for terrorist purposes for the letters sent in November and December 2022.
