South Carolina: Bomb Threat Against Sheriff Contained Viable IED Threat

On 2 February 2024, a 44-year-old man from Lexington allegedly sent an email from his personal account to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office threatening to use an IED against the Sheriff. The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) opened an investigation into the threat, consulted with SLED’s bomb squad, and determined that the suspect had identified a viable recipe for an IED in the emailed threat.

Oregon: Explosive Devices, BMM Found in Residence

On 5 February 2024, at approximately 1600 hours local time, members of the Rogue Area Drug Enforcement (RADE) team, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Medford, Grants Pass Police Department (GPPD), the Oregon State Police Explosive Unit, and DHS executed a drug-related search warrant in the 300 block of Colonial Drive in Grants Pass. Authorities seized explosive devices; bomb-making material (BMM), which included five commercial blasting caps; eight firearms; several ounces of methamphetamine; and an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency.

Colorado UPDATE: Balloon Used to Deliver IED

On 12 January 2024, at approximately 2210 hours local time, Colorado Springs Police received reports of an explosion near a business on the 500 block of E Costilla Street. Upon their arrival, police and bomb squad technicians discovered parts from the functioned IED. Surveillance video of the explosion showed an “improvised hot air balloon” with an object on fire hanging from it, which became stuck on a fence and detonated, damaging several buildings in the area.

Sweden: Suspected Grenade Found Outside Israeli Embassy

On 31 January 2024, a live hand grenade was discovered outside the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm. The National Bomb Squad responded and disposed of the grenade via a controlled detonation. No injuries were reported, and no further details were provided. The Swedish Security Service is assisting in the ongoing investigation.

Netherlands: Pyrotechnic Functions Killing 1

On 25 January 2024, at approximately 0130 hours local time, local first responders and police responded to Engelenburgstraat in The Hague after receiving reports of an explosion. At the scene, first responders discovered an injured man on the street who witnesses say held a pyrotechnic device in his hand when it functioned. The individual succumbed to his injuries in the hospital later in the day, and another 24-year-old individual was arrested in connection with the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

Texas: IED Discovered at Cemetery

On 28 January 2024, Collin County Sheriff's Office deputies and Plano Police Department (PPD) Bomb Squad technicians responded to a Collin County cemetery after an IED was discovered. A town resident posted a description of the device as a "bottle of hot sauce wrapped in tape" to a neighborhood webpage, but the details and outcome were not reported. The incident follows a similar discovery at the cemetery on 14 December 2023, when an object wrapped in black tape, confirmed as an IED, was found and PPD bomb technicians rendered it safe onsite.

New York: 2 Suspects Arrested After IEDs Found in Apartment

On 17 January 2024, New York City Police Department officers found 8 IEDs, 6 ghost guns, 600 rounds of ammunition, pyrotechnics, bomb-making instructions, and 3D printers while searching an apartment in Queens. One device was described as a “partially constructed IED rigged with a tripwire,” and a photo released of four IEDs depicts them as soda can-size cylindrical devices covered in tape with green fuses. Two brothers were taken into custody on 29 January and indicted on 130 counts of criminal possession of a weapon and related charges.

New Mexico: Grenade Found in Hotel Room

On 23 January 2024, the New Mexico State Police and Quay County Sheriff’s Office conducted a welfare check at a hotel in Tucumcari after receiving a tip about possible drug trafficking. Police arrested a 39-year-old man living at the hotel who had an active warrant for his arrest. Inside his room, they discovered a grenade, two firearms, and assorted drugs. The New Mexico State Police Bomb Team was called to the scene to remove the grenade for later disposal. It was unknown at the time of reporting whether the grenade was live.

Florida: Suspected Explosive Device Discovered Along Highway Exit Ramp

On 25 January 2024, at approximately 0840 hours local time, Florida Highway Patrol responded to the shoulder of the Interstate 75 exit ramp leading to State Road 52 in Pasco County for a report of a suspected explosive device that had been discovered by contractors with the Florida Department of Transportation. Tampa Police Department and state bomb technicians were contacted and arrived at the scene to examine the device. The device was removed for further testing. No further device details were released. An investigation is ongoing.
